Hello Gang, Hope everyone had a great summer and is having a great fall! I bought this D17 this spring and made a post on it here. Have a few questions now that I finally have some time to dig into it. I bought a new muffler and battery tray and battery but just flat didn't have the time to work on it this summer. Thanks in advance for all the answers and help! First question, I am assuming that this is an original Allis 3 point for this tractor. Are there parts to rebuild these? I have a missing handle that was welded many times it looks like. Can screw part be taken apart and the innards inspected or should I buy a new after market setup?   Second question, are these damned caps supposed to come off? Hate to attack it with a pipe wrench but I will if I have too.  Third question, this battery was hooked up like normal, positive to positive and ground to a ground. So basically I am asking has this been screwed with as I understand that these were positive grounded as original. What was changed and what should I look out for?  |

Mountainwolf69, I am not a guy on the hitch question. But some tractors have had previous owners commonly rerefed to as PO's, that messed with almost everything. My early D17 was the exception to the rule. That tractor is pretty much original except for a repaint once and new wrong decals. The battery was originally positive ground. I wouldn't change it till you fugure out the rest of the electrical system. The cap on the air cleaner should come off. I would try some blaster if you can get it in the joint. Maybe gentle upward tapping with a long bar / screw driver against the tube? Good luck and welcome! | The air cleaner cover should lift off straight up with a little effort. Tap GENTLY with a rubber or plastic hammer if need be, alternating from side to side. |

I always preferred a 2x4 to tap off the breather cap. I'm usually wrong but hadn't they changed to neg ground by the 17 IV? Anyway, if it is negative ground now and you got it that way then you are all set as the PO must've changed everything. ------------- D14, D17, 5020, 612H, CASE 446 |

That is the factory 3 point hitch, but you will not find many new parts available. Your best bet will be to put an ad up in the classified section here to find good used pieces. Using a pipe wrench on the air cleaner cap? BAD idea! Gentle tapping upward is your best bet. Although the tractor was positive ground when new, anything can be changed over 50+ years. Positive or negative ground does not really affect the performance of the tractor at all. All of my tractors have been changed to negative ground. It's not a hard job to change. I would like to thank everyone who made a reply to my questions. I had done all the tapping and back and forth on the air cleaner cap I was gonna do, anything harder and I was gonna bend the hell out of it. I hit it with some heat and leather wrapped the jaws on a pipe wrench and BAM, it came right off. The only thing I really would like to learn about is the changes that were made to this tractor in electrical side of things, I am assuming that there were parts added or removed to make it a Neg ground system. If anyone can just point me in a direction I will do the reading up. Thanks again!
