My 026 Stihl saw gave up Saturday! Gave me 26 years good service. Checked the compression and got 92 psi. Book says 125 is low! Called the Stihl dealer and for him to rebuild $350. I looked up what I figured the saw would need and had $175-200. New 261C saw is $585. I bought a CS 490 Echo for $349+ tax. I will rebuild the 026 this summer for a spare. Need to cut wood now! Today was the first day cutting with the Echo. It cuts and is lightweight which I like! Time will tell how it holds up. One thing about the color,it matches my Allis Chalmers tractors and Kubota RTV!

The Echo should be a good saw for you. If we had a good dealer around here I would not be afraid to buy one. I traded off my one of my little Poulans for a Jonsered 625. Need to take it to the woods and get some firewood.

The intent is to make repair parts too expensive to retain the OLD Saws, buy New Replacement Saws and keep industry flowing. Sorry to say it does work.

Had a Poulan chain saw that would not start . Shop also told me that the compression was low and it wasn't worth fixing . Sold me a new Echo saw . đ¤ Thanks

I've got TWO Poulan 18" here AND 2 Poulan leaf blowers, all 'ran when parked' NONE start now,and a Stihl weedwacker hoping I get $150 for the lot to help pay for ONE new saw. I have to wait for Mr. Sun to wakeup first though, so I can take pictures. So WHEN is Spring coming back ????
BTW EVERYTHING today is made to NOT be worth fixin, keeps 'them' in business....

Ya my Poulan wouldn't start either. Finally got to looking at it. Pulled the spark plug I could turn the ceramic part with my fingers before pulling the plug The new plug and plug socket I bought in 1986 when I got the saw were still in the package. Put the plug in and it runs great.

I checked compression with my tester. I called the Stihl Dealer who estimated cost over the phone. I looked up what I felt was the parts needed to repair as I haven't tore the saw down. And yes there are unscrupulous dealers and replacement parts are expensive. I haven't had a lot of time to cut wood as I detest cutting wood in the rain as that is all it has done here since spring!

Klinemar,,,,i dont think that just because you have 92 pounds of compression is the problem,,,that saw should run there,,,will it have the power it should have,,,,,no but it should run
have you check the fuel line and filter?? maybe the carb got some weee tiny little piece of crud in it or a piece of the old fuel line that is breaking down
i think you should change the plug and put a new fuel line and filter on it and see what happens,,,i bet it will run
i dont trust to many dealers,,,,some are honest,,,some just dont want to work on the older saws,,,reason i say that is it took my old husky in to be worked on a long time ago and the dealer told me the motor was junk,,,he wanted to sell a new saw,,,i took the old saw home and put the stuff i told you on myself,,,cost was then around 12-15 bucks,,,,well im still using that old saw 15 years later
i just picked up another old husky,,,guy said it wont run,,,got it for a song,,,rebiult the carb,,put new plug,,new fuel line and filter on it,,,cost today was around 25,,,i used it saturday,,cut about a cord of wood,,,ran great
yeah parts are hard to find for the older saws....ebay is your friend for that
so just because the saw shop wanted to sell you a new saw and a jacked up price to work on your saw,,,,naw,,,,get that old saw singing again,,,,it will prolly still work the donkey off a new one
now this advice and opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it,,,and my .02

Thanks OCHarry. I will rebuild the 026 this summer as that will give me time to find the best price on parts. As I stated I needed a saw!

I have owned an Echo for many years. It always starts and runs good. If it isn't snowing next week I will be using it.

Be careful. You get what you pay for. A lot of aftermarket parts are junk. Meteor makes excellent pistons Caber for rings. Figure out why it scored in the first place .

The 490 should be a good saw. I have 2 of the little 310's and have cut acres of brush with them. I also use an old cs-8000 on my Alaskan lumber attachment to skin bigger logs down so they fit the bandmill. ---Right now the old saw runs/cuts on 70 psi compression. --I know it needs a new piston/jug, but for the little I use it I get along fine with it. I was given a Sthil ms 250 that wouldnt start and the dealer said there was nothing wrong with it!-- well the owner got pissed off at it and gave it to me to get rid of it. This saw didn't have 10 hours run time on it. ---2 years later I finally stumbled onto the problem and today it starts/runs fine.
All brands have that "dud - of - the - batch, and some of them can never be fixed. I have Poulan, Mac's, Huskies, Echo's and Homelites. All have good models, and all have bad models. --- I was never partial to any specific brand. If they start/run/cut, I'm a happy camper!

Echo makes good stuff. I have three line trimmers and a blower made by them. You ask why I have three line trimmers. One was dad's he bought in 1985. I liked it so much I bought one in 1986. Both still run. I wanted more power and a straight shaft so there came the third one.

I am not color blind. My first chainsaw was a Homelite XL12. Then came a McCullough Super Pro 70. Next was the Stihl 026 and a 460 which 4 years ago my son dropped a tree on so I bought the 461. Now I bought a Husqvarna 240 for trimming and to use around building projects. It is a cheap saw and I don't foresee it lasting long . I just bought the Echo CS 490 to use until I can rebuild the 026 and after running the Echo I believe I made a mistake buying the Husqvarna!So as you can see I am not color blind!

Stihl seem very good at making parts obsolete so can't fix saws and some of them not very old models. With some help from professional saw forums, can adapt parts like electronic ignitions from later models in some cases.

Klinemar, there is some stuff called Start that is quite remarkable.Put fuel in your saw and add what it calls for on the can. Choke it until fuel is running out the exhaust. Set it down for an hour or so. Don't choke it and see if it starts. Repeat if necessary. I don't know how many I've used it on. Sure does save a lot of expense and time.
