My newest grandson (four months old) had an appointment yesterday for what we thought was to get measured up for one of those helmets that you see more and more babies wearing now a days to properly shape their heads. Well, the doctor found things a little more serious than just requiring a helmet. The poor little fella is going to have to go to Mayo clinic at Rochester and probably go under a surgery on his skull to fix some stuff. Something to do with some growth plates on the skull closing up before they're supposed to be closing, and therefore won't allow his brain to continue growing. I am very glad that they are able to fix such stuff, but I am also worrying myself sick for the little guy. We all love him so much and can't fathom that he'll have to go through this. We'll do everything in our power and leave the rest in God's hands. Darrel

He's still at home. With memorial day weekend, they are still waiting on the call from Rochester to give them the appointment date. I am pretty sure that they will get the call tomorrow, and probably be on the way shortly thereafter. The little guy really doesn't know that he has anything wrong with him yet. I guess that if something doesn't get done, then his brain won't have room to grow, and will result in brain damage. I'll keep you all posted on what happens. Thanks again. Darrel

They finally got an appointment, but not after some BS. Three different medical facilities involved, and they all had to play the "blame each other" game. They were told to wait to here from the clinic in Rochester; should have been first part of last week. Monday went by and nothing. But that was memorial day, so was excusable. Tuesday came and went, and they heard nothing. When Wednesday arrived, they called the number at Rochester that they were told to call if they didn't hear from them by mid week. They said that they needed more information. Well, I guess someone's ESP wasn't working to automatically know that they needed more information. Nuff said before I go ape and un-load on here. Long story short, they have an appointment in Rochester on Tuesday. Thank you all again. Darrel

Darrel...Mayo will prolly go thru all the testing of your little buddy so they can make their own assessment, they do not rely on assessments from other hospitals. they told us when we had Dad up there that they learned their lesson on that from several diff hospitals and doc's!

Darrel, Thanks for the update. Sounds like the normal merry-go-round as far as getting appointment. As usual, left hand doesn't know what right is doing. Take heart that God is still in control. Any time there is more than one doc or hospital involved, there are going to be delays, difficulties of some nature. Prayers still being asked. God Bless.

Well, the kids got home from Rochester tonight. They have to turn around and head back again on Monday, though. Surgery will be, I think, on Tuesday. Going to be a long road ahead. I guess that there will be a lot of checkups from now until he reaches five years old. Thanks so much for keeping us in your prayers. Darrel

I have a nephew that went through the same thing when he was that age and I think Mayo took care of him too. He spent his first couple of years going back and forth getting bigger helmets and adjustments as he grew. He is a spunky, strong teenager now with no lasting effects from having gone through this. Thoughts and prayers your way anyway though.

The kids are on there way to Rochester. Pre-op appointments tomorrow, and surgery early Wednesday morning. I guess that the little guy will get released from the hospital already on Thursday, and they'll head home on Friday. I'm feeling a little better about the fact that they are doing what they call endoscope (not sure about spelling, but it means that he'll just get a few small incisions, rather than cutting his whole head open). The kids got home from Rochester last night. I stopped by to visit after I got off work today. That's one tough lil fella. He has a one incision about 3 to 4 inches long on his head and several smaller ones. He has some black and blue areas and some swelling, but he's just as happy as can be. Guess he's not even on anything for pain any more. Amazing. Darrel
