Question, we were in the process of replacing the temperature gauge on our CA and in the process of removing the old gauge, we twisted-pulled the aluminum threads on the upper housing that holds the temp gauge and has the opening going to the top of the radiator.  I had put the question out on the classifieds looking for this aluminum top piece that holds the thermostat and also entails some type of additional waterline coming from the water pump.  In my search for a used aluminum upper, not many people had ever saw that setup on a CA.  The exploded parts/service manuals I have don't show this either.

I tried to sketch a picture of what we are asking, that if we switch to the common one piece thermostat housing, can I plug off the opening on the water pump?  This set-up of this smaller hose is like what I have on my later D-10s.

These are some pictures of what I'm wondering if I can replace.  Sounds like these aluminum housing halves are a rare setup, any local tractor bone yard has numerous cast iron upper housings.

The housing you have shows in the AGCO Parts Books on line, the attached copy of the pages will give you the part numbers, if you don't have them. If you check out the CA parts book on line it also shows a water pump with the bypass connection.

If you have (or can find) an adapter, like is used to screw into a cylinder head for some capillary tube gauges, you could see if the gauge nut will screw into it and seat. I thought I had an old gauge and was going to try it in an adapter but I guess it got thrown out. If it will, you could tap the stripped gauge hole in your aluminum housing to the NPT size for the adapter to thread into. Then install the the temp gauge into the adapter fitting.

The same gasket is used to attach to the cylinder head for both thermostat housings, so you may be able to change the entire housing/thermostat and plug the port in the water pump.
