Get it rebuilt before you burn it up.

A low battery can cause a generator or an alternator to get very hot. Try putting a battery charger on the battery for a while.

Question #1.  Is the charging system working?  Question #2. If it is working, what is the rate of charge?? should only be 2-3 amps unless you are running the lights. More than 2-3 amps of charge will create more heat.  Question #3.  How hot is it??   Just because you can't hold your hand on it doesn't automatically mean there is a problem, especially if the charging rate is correct. I suppose the rear bushing could be failing.

Is it making any scary noises?  What's your system voltage?  Put a voltmeter on it...  I don't know all the variations that would've shown up on the D19, but if there's a mechanical regulator on it, and the regulation armature contact is stuck, it might be running full field current, thus... full voltage... but you'd probably experience other very uncomfortable symptoms soon...
