As my 93 pickup is getting to show its age with rust and was always a bit overworked with what I was doing, I've been looking for something to replace it. With the cost of a new pickup costing more nowadays than I've ever paid for a road tractor, my search has been for a road tractor to put the engine from my pickup into along with a real Allison. My first choice had been for a 60-75 C model HD Dodge. When I could find one, they were either not for sale or rusted out. So on to a second choice. Back when I started trucking in the late 70's my first truck was a 69 single axle Astro sleeper. It had a 238 DD/ 10 speed. I liked the cab so much I found a 79 with a little longer wheelbase and a Formula 290 Cummings/9speed. It was no speed demon, but once you got into high gear, it took a mountain to make you downshift. Here's a 79 Astro sleeper almost Identical to the 79 that I had, only a bit more wheelbase with NewWay airide and cab air ride. My boss was good enough to let me use the work truck and tow hook to got out below Clumberland to get it.
------------- If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere. Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

That will be a nice rig. Never liked getting in and out but once up there you could see to Tuesday! I just drove from Ohio back home to Colorado on I 70, I think I could have counted all the cab overs I saw on one hand. Back before they changed the bridge and length laws, nearly half the tractors on the road were cab overs.

Gotta agree on the price of pickups. I went the same route for my toter rig. Bought a C7000 GMC for $1000 vs $20,000 for a pickup that's half wore out. Definitely has some potential! I can picture a flatbed a big toolbox behind the cab. I wouldn't shorten the frame. Short wheelbase on concrete highway, and you get a BAD case of the hops. Would be neat if you could find a set of the old back up bells for the rear axle. That would dress up those Dayton hubs.

Technically I will be required to go into weigh stations. Although for most of the places I’ll be going I can aviod them. Even so with Antique tags I doubt I’ll be hassled much. Locally the landscapers are in the bears sights around here. For now I plan on leaving everything about the truck as it is until I can have reason to do otherwise. It might be a bit of overkill to have out in front of my 20’ aluminum gooseneck, but I have the option to hitch to just about anything I want to now.

Didn't want to deal with northern Indiana and Illinois traffic so I took 70 west. Seeing Shameless twice in one summer might be too much, never know what shenanigan he might have up his sleeve!
It's so dry here, I'd take any "pretty" he is willing to send me!

I had a d-800 we ran antique plates on for about10 years, Highway police pulled me over he thought truck was cool as was older than him, told me I couldn't run antique tags on big truck as I had to pay for tonnage, didn't argue with him as I got away without a ticket

A guy I know in Pennsylvania runs antique plates on several old trucks. He says it's legal as long as you're hauling your own stuff and not daily
