So I am about to drain and replace the oil in the transmission of the D15. I have to replace the PTO seal anyway, and the oil in the transmission should be changed. I noted some comments on supplier sites that the 80/90 weight GL-5 spec is not suitable for "yellow metal" in older tractor transmissions. One site indicated GL-4 would be better. Had some good oil conversations already on this site, so looking forward to your thoughts on the best transmission oil.

“Yellow metal” is bronze. Bronze was primarily used in worm gearing; which I do not believe was in the D15 transmission.
If you are worried, it is the ‘EP’ (Extreme Pressure) additive(s) that is the usual culprit in attacking bronze.

I've had 'universal tractor hydraulic fluid' in every sump other than the engine(SAE30) in my D-14s for about a decade. OK, I don't run them every day but yeesh after 60 years can't see what would be the problems running it in a D-15.

So if I understand right something like a Hytran, or similar? I bought a couple extra pails of straight hydraulic oil to put into a 3 pt backhoe a few years ago. This is just Wally world hydraulic fluid, not a hydraulic transmission oil. I have it but was not thinking of using that.

We have the cheap universal from Theisens in every sump of my d15 except the engine. Yellow and green bucket states it works for allis/agco hydraulic oil. We wouldn't put in in the big tractors but its fine in the little guys.

up here the Wallyworld 'UTF' has a yellow lid,seems fine to My fleet...
HyTran, sounds like the JD name used in hydrostatic transaxles ?
One thing though, it is best to drain ALL of the oil out ,overnight or longer, as some oil don't like others.

The chances of you having an oil related problem with the transmission is about the same as getting struck with lightning. The only transmission failures are related to people grinding them into gear and then they start jumping out of gear. There is no oil that will cure that.

I have had Farm and Fleet universal transdraulic fluid in my WD45 since 1983. Wally world has the same stuff. Prolly came from the same batch even?

Thanks all. I will go get a bucket of the Hydraulic transmission fluid, and get to draining the transmission this morning.

I always look on the container to see if it is a replacement for Allis Chalmers 821 Power Fluid. I was in Walmart a few days ago and their hydraulic/transmission oil says it is compatible with 821,
