Just wondering how much of a job it is? have to play with the levers to get the remotes to work sometimes.. previous owner has plastic ties holding the cables in place. Maybe I just need new clips? Also park doesn't work either, would it be the cable? Still haven't got the throttle fixed, tractor doesn't seem to rev out all the way and throttle lever shuts off the engine. Have a manual now though so should help.

If the remote cables aren't broken, they are probably fine. They are secured at each end with zip ties, so if a zip tie is broken all the "playing around" doesn't get it to fall back in place. There are ball sockets on each end that might be loose. There are levers connected to the cables under the seat that get worn out where they connect to the valve spools. I'm thinking you could have low hydraulic stand-by pressure which can make remotes sluggish. You need to look at cable connections and linkage. Park doesn't work?? Does it shift into LOW and HIGH range and just not park?? Again it could be a broken small cable or its ends loose/broken. Going to have to look to determine the issue. |

Thanks for the help, I don't live near the tractor, So will have to check out all the cables and ends and figure it out. I do remember seeing the zip ties and looked like one just had wire holding it, I'm also thinking you are correct and it is the ball sockets. It shifts from low to high.. but not perfectly, almost seems like the cable has a bit of slop as it will sometimes grind and not go in, but If I had a bit more travel on the lever I feel it would go right in no problem. Also the Tach doesn't work, they pick up from the alternator correct? Not sure if my service manual shows that, I will have to look. Like this 7040 so much I bought another one. Can't wait to pick it up.

| The tachometer is fed by the alternator electrically, not mechanically like the older tractors. You are not limited to buying a tachometer from AGCO. A good, price effective option is VDO 333-363. Has hours, 4000 RPM range, many different ways to calibrate it, Backlit, correct size, and looks good. |

The biggest issue I had with the slop in the remotes was in the pivots at the valves. In the picture the cables hook to the bottom round hole. The top elongated holes that go into the valve end don't look worn much but they had a lot of slop when you have someone work the lever and watch the movement. I welded them up and then reground the elongated hole. Hard to see in the picture but the shaft has grooves worn in it. I replaced that with a hardened shaft from a conveyor bearing setup, I think it was 5/8. I welded a washer at the point where they had the tabs on the old one. Those 2 things made a huge difference in the movement at the levers. I also resealed the remotes and the 3 point valve at the same time.

| The pin that goes through spotted holes also gets worn. A support from 5/8 rod to a tie bolt on left end of valve will also help. MACK |

Thanks, I will be looking into the cables to see what I need to do. Another question, Just bought another 7040.. Noticed it has a filter beside the the frame rail along the engine. on the left hand side( entry side) Just wondering what that filter would be for?

Ok thanks, Any reason my current 7040 doesn't have that filter? or is it in a different location? I should probably look on eBay for a operators manual, already Bought a service manual.

Good to know.. Now I'm wondering why my first 7040 doesn't seem to have that filter. Maybe that's why it only goes 12 mph on the road lol. Fuel shut off is also backwards from the way the normal 7040's are. New one you pull the shut off out to run the tractor, push in to stop. First one has a different shut off, like a little t-handle and you push it in to run the tractor pull out to stop. |
