I am rebuilding a 1950 WD.   Can anyone tell me whether a Zenith or Marvel Schebler is correct? Tractor Serial number is 38017.    What determined which carburetor was used?

What determined which brand they got was whatever was alongside the assembly line at the time of a build. That's why they had two vendors.

There is no way to tell what your tractor had unless you have records or can track down the original owner. There are no factory records of that time period, as I understand many were lost in a fire or destroyed when A-C closed down. Even then, there probably were no build sheets for these tractors, they just threw them together and off they went. Both carbs have pros and cons, Marvel seem to be a little easier to tune.

In my experience most WD's had Zenith carbs and My 54 and 57 WD-45's have Marvel Schebler carbs. If I had to guess on your WD, I'd lean towards a Zenith.  My Grandfathers 52 WD was purchased new and it has a Zenith carb.

The popular Carburetors that I've rebuilt for our customer's for the WD is the Marvel TSX 159, or 422. The Zeniths are 9707,9707A, & 9707C. On occasions, I may rebuild a 8979 on the real early models. The WC, and WF models also shared the same Carburetors with the 201 engine...  HTH

Thank you all for your responses. I have both a Zenith 9707 and a MS TSX 159 so I can choose which to use.   I am building this tractor from parts of three different tractors.   I will rebuild both carbs and use the one that performs best once the engine is started.   I was pretty sure that it was a matter of what appeared on the assembly line at the time of assembly, but I appreciate the confirmation.   I could not find any information relating to particular serial numbers using a particulaer carburetor.    Thank you all again.
