My 220 has not been started for close to a year. I went to start it to help move a plow. Battery was dead and when tested is was shot. New battery installed and I attempted to start it. Turns over but would not fire a lick. Put some either in hers nose and it would start and run until it consumed all of the either. After numerous attempts failed I removed the sediment bowl and cleaned it. With the sediment bowl off I opened the valve before the sediment bowl and diesel fuel flowed at a good rate. I do not use BIO-DIESEL so that is not the problem. I used the pump , which is after the sediment bowl, but no help. Removed the square headed plug on top of the fuel filter and pumped it until all of the air was removed. Still no luck getting it to start. I removed and replaced the fuel filter. I filled the new filter full of fuel before attaching it. I used the pump to remove air and get the filter full of fuel, still will not start. What is the next step ?? Yes, I forgot to say it has fuel in the tank.

Could be just don't have fuel to injectors yet. Could have metering valve stuck, or pumping plungers stuck. MACK

Loosen the lines at the injectors turn it over and look for fuel also make sure your return line is not plugged.

It does sound like you never bled it through the pump and injectors. A second pair of hands is helpful. Loosen the lines at the injectors, have someone cranking the tractor, and as you get fuel squirting out of the injector lines, tighten them up. By the time you get 3 or so of them, it should be hitting.

If with the lines at the injectors loose you can't get fuel, then maybe a metering valve or something like that isn't working, but you have to bleed it all the way to the injectors.

been sitting and won't deliver fuel now, it's very likely stuck metering valve and or pumping plungers. Even though you think you are NOT using Bio-Diesel, nearly all fuel sold today DOES have some bio content, and that draws moisture and gets gummed up. Take the top cover off the pump and look inside. If it's nice and clean, you might get lucky and free things up with brakeleen, but if it's nasty inside, it should be torn down to be cleaned up so it will work properly.

I owned a diesel car, but used it all winter and never had any problems. I don't know what problems will be associated with diesel sitting over the winter, but I suspect moisture and algae would be the two biggest issues. I use Sta Bil in my small engine gasoline and just used up a 9 month old can of that gas. I had no problems and the mower starts on the first pull, just as it did when the mower was new and the gas was fresh. My question is... isn't there a decent diesel fuel stabilizer that would avoid these sorts of problems you have when using older fuel?

My Massey 35 with a CAV injector pump had a stuck metering valve, the guy at the injection shop told me these pumps after being rebuilt sitting on the shelf for a long time would freeze up.
Stands to reason his test bench would these days be using a bio blended fuel. Fuel left inside the rebuilt pump would be prone to picking up moisture.

Test stands usually are ran with a special test oil, not diesel, or bio diesel of any kind. It is expensive stuff, about $15/gal! It should not gum up.

I won't say it's impossible to get straight petro diesel, but it's not easy to find. If you have fuel to the hydraulic head and still no go, time to send it to Ed or local pump shop.

Throw a good chain around the front axle and pull it around in 8th gear with engine spinning at 1,000 RPM or more throttle set wide open and fuel knob pulled out. If that doesn't get it to start, yank off the injection pump.

Got some spare time today and a friend said he would help me start the AC 220. To make a long story short nothing he did would help start the 220. I have good clean fuel in the tank ( no bio diesel ) sediment bowl is clean and tight. Took the treaded plug out of the fuel filter holder and using the pump we had fuel with no air coming out of the hole. Replaced the pug and loosened the fitting on the fuel pipe going to the injector pump and using the pump we had plenty of fuel. After some more checking we found that we had no fuel coming from the top of the injector pump to the injector/s. What is strange to me is when the engine is being cranked it puts out smoke from the exhaust pipe. I'm at the point now that I think there is an issue with the injector pump. The tractor has a little under 3500 hours on it and it appears that the injector pump has never been off of the tractor. I'm still open to any and all ideas. RODNEY

give it a tiny, mist, wiff of ether. if it fires its a fuel deliver problem. also ck air filter, canister and all intake pipes for blockage (mouse house etc).

One time (out of more than I want to admit) I got lucky and took the screws that hold the top on the pump out and followed the linkage and was able to use good penetrating oil on it and carefully work it back and forth until it moved like it was supposed to. That pump had set less than a year. Everything else I've had similar problems with required professional help. Good luck!

Fuel on/off cable works as it should. I never thought about air intake issues such as mice . I'll give that an inspection tomorrow. Either in it's noise works to fire it off but when it is consumed it dies.

If it runs on ether, but not on fuel, it is an injection pump issue, and possibly the injectors will need looked over too. You have fuel to the pump, and linkages are working properly, the problem is likely in the pump, especially since you know it's never been off, and it has sat. I just bought a fence row 220, and it too will run on ether, but not fuel, so it's time to pull it off too. If you air intake was plugged up, it wouldn't have got the ether to run on. Mine doesn't smoke at all though.

I'd still drag it with a chain just for fun.
