I am using the best parts of two shift tower assemblies to make one good one for my 185. While assembling, I have found it tough to compress the detent spring and ball while sliding in the fork shafts. Is there a special tool for this? My punch combination is not working. Thanks!

I take an old intake valve like from a WD and grind a flat spot on the stem like 3/4 end up about 1/2 way threw compress the spring and ball down and slide the rail in and pull the valve out. Works pretty good.

Well, 45 turbo was right. I found an old punch and ground on it a bit. If I hold my mouth right, I can get the shafts in without much trouble. I guess I was just getting tired of crawling around on the shop floor looking for the detent balls when they went flying! LOL!

Use a old rail or shaft the same size, grind a tapered slot in end. Push taper over ball and spring, rotate shaft 180 degrees, push it back out with good shift rail. Makes it a piece of came. MACK
