I used this diagram to wire up the alternator on the d14. the only problem is the wire labeled R1 that comes out of the alternator. no matter were I hook it up on my ignition switch the tractor will stay running even with the key turned off, unless you unplug that wire. with out that wire hooked to anything the tractor starts, runs and is charging at just over 14 volts? I did not install the 10 watt resister in the R1 wire or the ballast resistor on the coil, since my tractor is 12 volt already. anybody have a clue were that wire should go on the ignition switch or just unhook it, since everything works with out it?

You need the 10 ohm resistor to prevent back feed. You can substitute a12v indicator lamp, wired in series from the key switch to the R=1 wire.

ok, thanks,, off to radio shack. was probly back feeding and keeping the tractor running when the key was off.

It definitely was back feeding to keep the engine running. Preventing that is the reason for the resistor, lamp, or diode in that location.

radio shack was closed, so looks like it'll have to wait till probly tuesday.

If your ignition switch has an ACC position run that wire to the ACC terminal on the switch.

the tractor may or may not charge correctly with the R1 wire removed. That is the excitation voltage for the alternator to kick in and charge. Single wire alternators have this internal... normally on a STANDARD alternator, it will not start to charge without the R1 wire attached.

Today's Radio Shack may not have that resistor. A 3 amp diode will work, they might have that but are selling out everything in the store at 60% discount.
A good source for electronic parts these days is Mouser. http://www.mouser.com" rel="nofollow - http://www.mouser.com
There are others too, like Jameco, All Electronics, and Digi-Key.
There are other solutions like the accessory terminal on a universal automotive ignition switch. Another solution is adding a pipe T to the oil pressure sensor or gauge and adding a switch that closes on pressure rise and isn't grounded (I have one out in the shed from NAPA) and wire that between the battery and the R-1 wire so the alternator gets power when the engine is running and producing oil pressure.

I put the wire on the accessory terminal and every thing is working they way it should. Thanks dt.

When the switch has the accessory terminal which only applies to universal automotive replacement switches, not tractor ignition switches, that is a fine solution to the back feeding of the ignition circuit from the alternator excitation wire.
