My boy asked me last night about the smaller PTO shaft on his C. Other than the mounted sickle mower, what did AC or other companies make that used the smaller shaft? Could a 40 or 60 combine be had with it? When did 1 3/8 become the standard for 540 PTO?

The 40 combine were made just for the B & C tractors. also you can put an adapter on the small PTO and run anything you want.

Most tractors eventually switched to the 1 3/8 PTO. Ford was the biggest straggler, using the small PTO through the 9 and 8N's well into the Jubilee's and early 800's.

Allis Chalmers B's went to 1 3/8 in 1951. All the CA's were 1 3/8s. Most tractors were 1 3/8s by the early to mid fifties. I have a 1950B with a 1 1/8 pto and two 1952 models with 1 3/8s.

We ran a sickle mower and a hammer mill on our C when I was a kid. We also baled with it once using a stamped steel adapter when the WD was broke and the hay needed to be baled. I still have the pto shafts end that was on my erskine snow blower that had the 1 1/8th shafts when I got it

My 1950 B has the 1-3/8" pto shaft.

I've wondered that often as well. My 8N and B both have the small shaft, and the B has the sickle mower drive sheave that fits on the small shaft, but I've never seen any other implements with the small shaft fitting.

my new holland 66's drive shaft fit the smaller pto. but I'm guessing somebody made it that way since the motor to run the baler was gone and it was converted to run off a tractor. everything else had the larger pto.

For years we used the sleve over the 1 1/8" shaft to adapt it to 1 3/8". Usually this solved the problem. However, under heavy use the sleve (?) would shatter. In that case we would change out the PTO for a PTO with the larger 1 3/8" shaft for safety. Good Luck! Bill Long

I know about the sleeve. Currently have one on the C now. I'm more curious about what AC made for the small shaft other than the 40 combine. Or would it have been more 3rd party equipment makers selling stuff?

Older John Deere a and b had small pto.---Dad always got the adapter sleves at TSC, when they were a tractor store! thanks; ac fleet
