Had an unfortunate thing happen - pulled the curved shifter(syncro trans) lever out to add some more weld on shifting ball, unknowingly pulled out a big somewhat magnetised screwdriver to put forks back in neutral, stuck screwdriver down and it pulled out the keys, but unfortunately, not enough magnetisim  to hold the keys - keys dropped down into transmission.  Pulled bolts out of tower, but tower seems to only rise up a quarter inch or so before binding.  From the shop book, it talks about the forks and the tower come away as one piece, but I am afraid of prying up with a screwdriver.

Have any of you folks pulled a tower from a WD45 or late model WD that can shed any light on this?

Have any of you had the alignment keys drop down into the trans? How did you get them out?  I have pulled the shifter at least 3 times before because of welding and grinding to make it shift better, but this is the first time I have screwed up this bad!

Thanks.

I think the official procedure requires the tower and transmission to be in 2nd gear. Someone posted the info once.

You were correct, Nathan.  Thanks so much. Now just have to get shifting ball welded and ground some more to finally get it to shift correctly and not get stuck in gear!

Merle, did you get the alignment keys out of the tranny?  How'd you do it?  Small magnet?

Yep, Nathan from SD said place in 2nd gear, and tower will come off, and he was correct.  I used a pencil shaped magnet, and was able to get the pins out!  I had visions of needing to pull the pto off to get them!

Now I'm just trying to weld and grind on the shift ball to get it right before I put it back together so this doesn't happen again.  Only problem, weather is too nice, so yard work comes first!    LOL.
