I know the 190's and XT's had several changes to the rear ends both as updates and on going production improvements. If I understand correctly there were changes in axle size. What are the different sizes? What are the differences between an early 190 and a series III? There is XT coming up on a sale and from the pics it looks like a series III decal but I realize that may have been added. Thanks Tom

Axle size early 2-3/4 vs later 3-1/4 if memory serves. Series III should have a 4 pinion differential. There are other changes at certain serial number breaks like speed changes but those are the two main changes that I know of.

The large axle came with the series 11. Which isn't technically a series ll. Flat top fenders and no bar grille came at the same time as the big axle. And as Long said the 4 pinion rearend came with the series lll. To look at them, you can't tell a series ll and lll apart.

Actually, the larger axle started already at sn 9000, still had had bar grill and sloped fenders till sn 19000 when they got the flat top fenders and newer style grill. Series III started at sn 23000 and had 4 pinion differential.

If I remember reading right, the axle size change took place sometime in 1966.
