I bought a 440 from a guy about 20 miles away and the next day my uncle bought a sign about an hour away. The sign has never been hung and sat in a hay loft until the last year when it was leaned up against the side of the barn outside. Still had the original bulbs in it and they all worked. For a young guy I find it pretty difficult to upload pictures to this site so sorry maybe another night ill get the ambition.

Great find for sure! That sign is in Mint condition, would love to find a sign like that for sure. Nice looking 440 as well. From the decals on that AC 440, was in originally a White/ Cream cab and later painted orange?

I like that sign. How much fun it would be to walk into the shop and see that hanging on the wall. I look at the Steiger built AC440 and wonder what would AC look like today if they could have bought Steiger instead of CaseIH. What would a 4W305 look like with tracks?

Yea for some reason the cab was painted. I also pressure washed it earlier and where it pivots there's some hoses rubbing on the mounts and there's even some Steiger green showing.

In all honestly, I am really happy with how the AC 7580's, AC 8550's, 4W-220's, and 4W-305's turned out by being fully designed by Allis Chalmers, built and sold. Don't think AC really would have needed to buy out another 4WD company to be competitive in the 4WD market. Yes, Steiger has a great reputation and a great product, but IMHO I think the 4W-305 cab was leaps and bounds ahead of the Steiger cab in the early 80's. Comparing the Steiger cab to the AC 8550 cab, might have been a different story, or would have been equal, but really think the 4W-305 overall had the better cab in the early 80's.
I think had the AC 4WD line continued on past 1985, and the Duetz deal never happened, I think AC would have been OK in the 4WD market. The power shift transmission that was being tested prior to the merger, would have been in production for 86, or 87 would have been a huge selling point. Plus we likely would have seen a higher HP 4W- 3XX, or 4W-4XX in the future and probably an expanded 4WD line up.
Just my opinion, I could not see AC sticking with Steiger, or even attempting to buy the brand. Maybe buying the McConnell 4WD company that built the AGCO STAR, or a merger with Versatile instead of FORD buying them out.

Only 800? Cheaper price then what I expected a sign in that condition would be worth. I was thinking more along the lines of $2500.00 +.
