Where is the amp meter/ignition box suppose to go on an IB? Can someone post a picture of where it goes please? I'm having some difficulty with the starter as well. Is there a specific starter for the IB? Seems it should be like a CA or late B version where the switch is on top of the starter and you pull a lever to engage it verse pushing it like most. How is this pre-war IB starter suppose to be set up? Anyone have pictures of that as well? ------------- Can't fix stupid |

AJ, the box is the same as the B and located at the bottom of the steering post. The starter rod is low and to the right in the photo. Not real clear, but you can see if you look close.

AJ, The battery box is mounted completely different on the pre-war IB's, and the electrical box is mounted to it - notice the difference in throttle control position. As for the starter switch, it is mounted below the starter, not above. For the most part, yours looks right. I'll see if I can dig up some pictures. |

From what information I found over the years when doing my IB over about 7-8 years ago, the Battery box was normally mounted right on the left fender like in Steve's picture. Now the IB could be equipped with a lot of attachments. Mine originally had a Sickle bar on it, so the Battery box I was told and seen pics of it would mounted on the right frame rail. My Battery box (what was left of it) was mounted on top of the frame rail on the left side in front of the left fender. But the box that was mounted there was home made. When I purchased a new Battery box, I went to the right frame rail and the holes in the new box lined right up with two holes that were in the right frame rail perfectly. So I assumed, the original box was mounted there like it was supposed to be, so I remounted it there. I added a Battery shut-off and other things, but that's my own add-ons. As for the Starter rod, in your pic, the Starter rod is hanging there like where it is in Steves picture. On my IB, mine was in the same spot. It was tough trying to get to it with my work boots on or reaching for it, so I made my own rod, put a 90 degree bend in it and put a ball on it. Makes it a bit easier to get to above the pedals. I also fabbed a support bracket at the tranny to keep it level. You can see in the pic where the Battery box is. Even though I don't have the Sickle bar, I decided to mount the Battery on the right frame rail anyway to keep it close to the Starter motor. Here's a pic of how the battery box is mounted on the 39 & 40 pre-war tractors.
Same location, different mounting method.The two studs on the right side of the box are where the electrical
control box (ammeter, light switch) would be mounted. This tractor was
converted to 12V (that's why the end of the box was cut-out. I don't have a decent photo of the starter rod or generator setup, but its a straight line from that bracket on the trans to the switch under the starter. To do this one back to the way it left the factory, an early A-C dealer parts catalog would be a huge benefit, as it will show you almost all the items you are seeking - for yours, look at the parts listed as IB prior to B55301. It's shocking to see just how many parts are unique to these earliest tractors. The last of the pre-war IB's (1941 run serial B55301 & up) have a battery box and control box setup very similar to the post-war tractors, shown in the other posts. I didn't like the battery box on the left fender or the right side frame so I decided to build a battery box and tuck it inside the frame behind the starter. Sat low enough that I can pull the starter out OVER the batter box........ I bought the smallest 12 volt 550 amp/hour battery I could find.

Fellas, Thanks for all of the above. I have a pre war IB and the info and photos will be a huge help when I get to restoring it (probably years from now). I printed all posts as I know I will not find this when I need it but it will be filed in my shop filing cabinet. A side shot of my Battery box on my IB. I also installed a shut-off switch and hour meter in the box lid. My IB is 12V. You can see the ground cable at the bellhousing.
