My 4w305 was burning coolant so I figured I had a bad head gasket which I did but when I took the head off I found one of the Pistons was pretty beat up so now I'm thinking a whole rebuild. My agco dealer is saying they cant order a complete kit and would have to order it by the piece which sounds pretty expensive. I tried google to find an alternative but didnt have any luck. Does anyone know where I could get a complete kit?

That a 6120T engine model right? Will a 6138 kit work? I'm not sure if the difference is in the crank or sleeve bore or both. If the difference in the crank then it won't work. MinnPar shows a kit for a 6138 and it shows "no longer available" for the 6129T kit.

I ordered one from jensales.com 2 days ago and they called a little later and said the kit is no longer available. I typed the reliance kit number into Google and the only result I got was this page does anyone else have any suggestions?

Agco was $4500 with no pistons or rings their has to be a better alternative I'll give minnpar a call

The 6120 uses a different piston than the 6138. The crankshaft is also different than a 6138. Other than those parts the bearings,gskts.,camshaft,etc. will interchange from model to model. I went through the same ordeal 20 years ago. Back then the only source for pistons was agco. I would consider making it a 6138 and then you would have an engine that would last. Good Luck, Mike

They are no longer avaliable anywhere as a whole kit , that I know of.

I called Ivan Sumerix and he said a couple years ago everyone quit making pistons and so he bought them all and now hes out. He has made a deal with someone to produce pistons but they have to reverse engineer them and it doesnt sound like he will have any for awhile. He offered to sell me a used piston and everything else for a rebuild but i would really like to have all new pistons.

I have read the above link will make pistons for anything,not sure if its true or cost effective.Maybe you and Ivan and possibly some others can place a order it would be more likely to get a better price. If rings are still available through Agco or other vendor that would be a plus as well.

I think I have one good used piston also. When I first bought my 8550 I didn't have the bucks for all new pistons etc. so I patched it together with 6 good used ones, it ran hard for almost 2k hours, then I bought the AGCO kit and installed them. If the used piston skirts aren't scuffed or scored and the top ring groove isn't wore too much, I'd find six new sleeves and give it a try. Like all A-C engines the most wear will be in that top ring groove area, which lets compression leak by causing excessive blowby that can lead to scoring. The 6120T was an orphan engine from conception. If you want to make it bullet proof make it into a 6138T(844ci).I also have the CAT part number for the valve Roto-Coils if you get that far. We ended up ordering a used piston as well as everything else to rebuild it from sumerix. Having pistons made was considered but I can't have it tying up shop space forever. I appreciate the suggestions everyone I followed up on all of them except having them made but didn't have any luck

My 8550 siezed up a rod bearing back in 1989 and broke the block and all. Way back then AC wanted $1400 a hole for sleeves and pistons, $6,000 for a reground crank and $6,000 for a used block. It would have been $20,000 for parts and then add on labor. I decided to do a repower with a 855 ci 350 hp small cam Cummins and it made a really good tractor out of it. The rebuilt Cummins I bought for $10,000 with no core and had to build my own bell housing with the help of a machine shop. It took me all winter including rebuilding the main transmission, power director, and drop box and lots of little things. The fuel savings alone more than paid the cost of the repower in 2 or 3 thousand hours. The rebuild has about 4,000 hrs on it now and still runs perfectly. I am retiring so looking at selling the tractor. Not sure what to suggest but the parts are all there to swap engines. Cummins rebuild kits are readily available for $1200-1500 for all six holes. The rest of these tractors was really well built so upgrading to an engine that will always have parts available is a good move. I am currently in the middle of painting the whole tractor but will post a couple of pics from last fall. Call me if interested in buying or repowering. 780 662 2614

Probably a good idea, but with the trucking on a tractor this big, is there any point chasing a market so far away?
