I need to put a new TL in my 7050 this winter and that got me thinking about this. Why do the powershift trannys use a pressure plate and the power directors use the Belleville spring? Is there a benefit to one over the other? Could the PP be used on the 7050?

In the original design of the Power-Shift transmission, Engineers were concerned about possible Winter starting problems, and wanted a way to release the entire driveline to ease cranking speed concerns. Turns out, there never really was an issue, so there were never any fingers added to the pressure plate. As time went on, the last of the 7040-7060 Power-Shift tractors used the same flywheel and torque limiter as the Power Directors tractors. The pressure plate design won't fit in a Power Director bell housing.

early 7020's  PS units had the light fly wheel  - we changed out several to the heavy flywheel with clutch type pressure plate to increase flywheel inertia for the PS and non stall when reversed...  just FYI   7020's could have both on a PS...

I installed a combine flywheel (N-6 or L-2...can't remember) on an 8050 PShift once to give it some more hay baler flywheel torque.

There is not enough room in PD tractors for pressure plate type clutch torque limiter.      MACK

i have quite a time with my 7020 stalling in high reverse, where would I find a heavy flywheel in what model tractors? we have a local wrecker that may have one!

Just put the PS hub into the combine disc and it lined up? Think that would he the ticket for our chopper tractor.

Nope. Still able to use the spring pressure plate and T L disc. Seems to me like that flywheel weighed just over 100 lbs.

Don't the big boys in tractor pulling add weight to the flywheels to make them lug better ?

No, we put weights on fingers for centrifugal force to engage clutch. The more weights on fingers, the more pressure on clutch discs.     MACK
