When I remove the + cable (which is ground) on my CA and connect a volt meter between the + battery post and the disconncected battery cable (ground) I read 6.xx volts. Is this normal? This is with light switch off and the key switch off.

The volt meter is very sensitive, needs very little current, it is showing there is come current from the negative post to ground, but that can be literally a few microamps for a digital meter to read. Could be the current in damp dust, or a problem with the regulator or a switch.
A test lamp makes a better test, even better if the lamp takes an amp to light. Then you can test the voltage across the lamp between the battery post and the ground cable. If there are several volts with the lamp in the circuit you need to find the load because it will discharge the battery in a while.
Your meter probably has a current scale but its easily damaged by excess current at a minimum blowing a fuse inside but the damage can be greater if the current is too much for the circuits in the meter.

Thanks Gerald, I hadn't thought of putting an amp meter in series to check for amp draw. I am not getting any spark when removing the cable. Digital meter has a 10 amp meter built in so I might try putting it in series. Thanks, Tim

Nooooo. Do it through way Gerald said. One wrong move doing it your way and poof goes the fuse in your meter. Many times those fuses are a bit unusual and very hard to find.
I've checked leakage directly, but I always used an amp clamp device which isolated the meter.
