I've heard about different types of decals, and I don't know much about them. I hear a lot of folks say they don't like one or the other. What's the big difference in the two? Advantages/disadvantages?
Thanks

Mylar is cheaper but tends to fade. Vinyl is more expensive but lasts a lot longer and looks better. I personally despise mylar decals.

If you are going to take the time to put decals on your tractor, spend a little extra and get good quality vinyl.

Not needing to...yet...maybe this spring. If I paint the tractor, it will be a working paint job at best. Just something to protect it. It will be barn kept though, so fading shouldn't be to much of an issue. There's not much of the last paint job left (brush painted 30+ years ago)

The Mylar decals are thin and fragile but if you clear coat over them they look great and are protected. If doing a single stage paint then vinyl is the way to go as the decal is on top of the paint.

A thought I heard clear coat will change the shade of the decal color, especially white.

I have not seen that with the ones I have done so maybe it depends on what type/brand of clear coat was used?

I saw this yesterday and remembered to check Theissen's for decals for Creston. You were wanting the older all gold A-C decal right? They only have them in 2". They have the orange A-C decal in 6" and 2".

I've used both, probably 5 sets of Mylar and 20 -- 25 sets of vinyl. As others have said, vinyl is a better decal. With Mylar, there is a clear square or rectangular background for the decal. The letters are printed on it. When applying you spray the sheet metal with water or window cleaner so that you can squeegee the air bubbles out. This also allows you to slide the decal around for correct positioning. Be careful though as they are extremely thin and can and will fold themselves over and/or bunch up. I've seen Mylar applied without water - looks terrible. Impossible to get the air bubbles out without this process. You will still see the clear background to some extent.

Vinyl usually ends up being just the individual letters when you're finished. There is a piece of paper on the top of the vinyl decals. You peel off the background from the back side, the letters saying on the front sheet. You then carefully position the paper, burnish the letters on, then peel off the front paper. You cannot slide the copy around once stuck on so align carefully.
