Hey everyone! I know this is off color but does anyone have any experience with a John Deere 4400 combine? We had a 6600 and still do have a 7700. 7700 is getting really tired. I found this little 4400 that looks pretty clean. It will be used for alfalfa seed and occasionally cut some hay barley seed. Any problem areas on these 4400s to watch for? This one does have the rotary screen for the radiator. It is also gas. I believe it's the GM 292. Thanks! Ben |

I ran a 1978 6600 for a while once, so I have a little experience with the combines. I think the --00 series (early ones with the cab visor) are the prettiest combines JD built, followed by the round tail 55/45/95, but that's the end of what I like about them. Super hard to work on, compared to our L3. Guards are held on by wind nuts, etc. The L3 only has swing away guards. Rotary screen on the 4400 is a plus. My opinion...I'd never want one for actual "work". Maybe a nice shiny original just to look at? However, if you've had good luck with your --00 series so far and are satisfied with their performance, go for it. If you've never ran one (a 4400) before, going from the big 7700 to the tiny 4400 will take some getting used to. You're losing a lot of capacity. Like going from an L to an F (or maybe smaller) Didn't Shameless say once they're positive ground?

They are every bit as hard to maintain as the other 00 series.

| the guy i bought my F from also had a 4400. he used the gleaner for beans and wheat, and the deere for corn. they are about the same size. i guess he thought the 4400 did better in corn |

| I had one in my earlier years. it was no piece of joy to work on, it got me thru a couple harvests until it burnt! to tell you the truth, the jd 45 combine was a lot better than that 4400 ever was! and I remember if I needed any parts for the 45, I just had to find a junked 4400 and the parts would interchange! yes they were negative ground. the 45 was positive ground. |

Neighbor where I rented a house for 40 years beginning in 1970 used one for at least 25 years. It seemed to do his work on about 400 crop acres corn and beans. I have no idea how it would do on small grass seeds. I'd think it would need a lot smaller screens and closer spaced concave bars and cylinder bars. I just searched http://www.shoupparts.com" rel="nofollow - http://www.shoupparts.com and they do have chains and some lift parts, but no concaves or screens. For corn and beans I'm sure it was a better machine than IH 715, 815, and 915, but the 1440 and 1460 IH combines were better. Wasn't the AC 70 or 90 considered great on grass seeds? Gerald J. |

| I run a 4420 right now, and get on OK. Very few changes from a 4400 to a 4420. I'd think if you've run those others, you have as good of an opinion as anyone. I don't think it's that bad to work on, but I guess I don't know any better either. |

I know Ill be downsizing greatly but we don't farm much anymore so maybe 100-150 acres at the most each year for alfalfa and possibly some hay barley seed or feed barley. Some years we probably won't even use it. I know Ill have to get an alfalfa seed screen for it for alfalfa. It goes in place of the sieves. I hope concaves are still available as I was hoping to put it through the shop some winter and go completely through it. If parts are hard to find maybe I should look elsewhere for another color. I guess I'm just partial to the deeres as they are what I've grown up with and gotten used to. They also seem to do a good job on alfalfa seed. Well I guess I just need to go look at it and decide. | baverwolf, for concaves, I got a new one made by St. John's Welding. Had them make new concave and cylinder bars, since they are made to order, I'm sure they will still make one. Just a couple other thoughts, my 4420 is a diesel, which would be better I think, and for the price difference if you shop around, if you got a 6620 instead of a 4400, you would get hydro, which would be nice. In any case, good luck. |

I watched two really super nice 6620 combine sell cheap. They were really nice and the owners live not far from me so I know they were in showroom condition. And that's no exaggeration. The owners are brothers and each kept their farm picture perfect. Anyhow the one sold for $5,750 and the other sold for $5,000. You couldn't have found nicer 6620 combines. That's what I'd look for if I were to stick with Deere. Uncle had a 4400 diesel when I was still too young to help. He got along good with it. Finally parked it when the hired guy ran a rock through it and ruined the concaves and bars. I don't know enough about them or other colors to know what is hard to work on, but I know enough to know that if you are used to working on a 6600 and 7700 you'll be fine. Going from a 4400 to 7720 wasn't a bad learning curve for my uncle. Going from Red to a 4400 is. Check Shoups and Deere for concaves and bars. |
