Hello all,
I've been busy for the last 8-9 months restoring the 1949 WD that my father purchased new. The other day my attention focused on the new replacement tool box waiting to be installed and the hole in the front of the box. Does anyone know the purpose of this hole? I grew up on WD / WD-45's and never could see a use for the hole in the front of the tool box. Unless it's an access for mice?

It's for the end of the grease gun to stick out.

Very interesting. I guess they didn't figure on your using the gun that came with the tractor. Our box was always full of tools and hitch pins so dad always had the grease gun on top of all that and the lid not closed. The original box had a hasp latch on it instead of the style they make now with holes for a padlock or hook. Wish they made a replacement with the hasp.
     Thank you for the reply.

My dad said it was for the grease gun, but he always stuck it between the sc release lever and the shift tower.

Dad always kept a giant crescent wrench in the tool box--so big that about 2-3" stuck out through that hole.  That tractor was parked in the barn at another farm and Dad and I were there for something.  A big ground hog was in the barn right on the corner of the new (not yet painted) barn doors.  They were pretty foxy, even fixed up with a flush hinged service door.  Dad says, "Quick, hand me that crescent wrench!"  Flings it at the ground hog, misses and shatters the bottom corner of the door.  The ground hog saunters off, I wanted to laugh in the worst way, but thought the wrench would get thrown at me!  That barn is now gone; some other people run that place.  Sorry for the thread hi-jack, but can't look at the tool box and not remember that story.  R. it was for the grease gun hose to stick out, but they soon quit that cuz the dirt gathered on the end of the gun and not any wiped the dirt off before using it and that caused bearing/bushing failure sooner than was sposed to! then dirt/dust was also getting inside as was other things mentioned above! wasps being the worst!

It's been a long time ago but I think dad and grandpa always put the grease gun between the engine and frame on the D sires tractors.

Grease Gun. An old dealer in Plano TX ask me one time if I knew what it was. I got it right according to him.

Just curious, was there a WD toolbox version made without the hole? I was always told you knew it was original with the hole and reproduction/after market with no hole?

The hole is to allow mice to get into the box and pee all over your tools. Bob
