Anybody know what the proper way to adjust the regulator on my HD6b.It is charging 15.5 volts on right battery and 16 on left battery ,it seems fine at the starter with 26 volts?

The generator and regulator are charging the (2) batteries as a 24 volt system. Any voltage reading of individual batteries is dew to the batteries position in the system as well as the internal resistance of the battery. If you want to find out which factor is dominant use a battery tester and document the internal resistance. Another way is to switch battery positions and remeasure the voltage.

I swapped the batteries from side to side ,voltage was still high at each battery. I removed the cover on the regulator, and someone had scribed 14 on the center coil,and 28 on the left coil.They had scribed something on the right coil but it was unreadable. The middle and left coils have nylon adjusters ,the right has a recessed screw that has a flap over half of it . I turned the middle adjuster and voltage output was finally around 14volt on right battery but left battery was still around 16 volts so I took a chance and adjusted the left coil until 14 volts . Still has 26.6 at the starter ,I think I may install a volt meter on the dash . Luckily I was able to revive the batteries .I doubt they will take the abuse to long

It takes 13.7 volts to begin to charge a 12 volt battery. I gather that you think your voltage readings are too high. Use your volt meter on your running automobile. You will probably find about 17 volts.
