Friend has a CASE-IH about 25 years old. Front wheel assist , 6 cyl diesel, maybe 80 HP and I think it is a 4230 ???

In the past few months the tractor seems to loose prime to the fuel pump after setting for a few days. This is a manual shut off tractor. You pull up on a knob to shut off the fuel. I can see the cable and link on the fuel pump move open and close. I don't think the shut off is the problem, but im not sure. It has a plunger primer pump mounted on the tractor frame by the fuel filters. If I pump it 20 times, it will eventually start back up........ is there a check valve leaking off, or does the hand priming overpower a stuck valve...... or ? ......... im open for ideas on where to start.

Start by looking to debris screens in the fuel tank outlet, then for hoses or tubing that may have a slight pinhole that will not always weep but will suck air like a braided hydraulic hose. Next look at that priming pump for it may leak around the packing on the plunger and while may re-prime the system could suck air when running. My 180D had a outlet screen in the sediment bowl, was darn near locked tight with crud.

I will check the hoses for cracks Dave... im not sure about the pluggage as it runs fine once it starts up. Just seems to run out of fuel after setting a few days. Once primed, it runs fine... I will check for "wetness" on the lines and fittings......... I was hoping there was some "secret" specific to these old CASE-IH motors.

Should be old standard American Bosch or Roosa system fuel delivery, if it is a Stanadyne/Roosa Master then look for the pump to be failing otherwise welcome to low sulfur diesel issues as we all get to play with.
