whew...that thing is awesum! what a time saver! does/where does the rust go? melts? blows off? wonder if it would cut thru the metal if left in one spot for some time?

It is a 1000 watt laser. That is crazy and scarry. That thing would cause massive burns. It works by heating the surface of the metal so quickly that the bond between the rust and the steal is broken and the rust flakes off. Basically think of it as striking a bell with a hammer the laser actually vibrates the surface of the steal so fast that the rust pops off. I have seen something like that done with lasers before to clean circuit board traces.

I never found a price for the 1,000 watt, but a 500 watt is $499,000 new.
And a 1,000 watt can be rented for $7,500 a week.

That was a couple of ads that I found. A little steep! LOL!

Shameless if the metal is thin it would deform it for sure from the heat. The area that that beam sweeps is very wide even for the power. A 500 watt laser will focus into a spot about 1/8th of an inch and drill a whole through about 1/2 an inch of steal be for the beam goes out of focus. That laser has such a wide beam I don't think it would have the power to get the metal red hot expecially given that it is hand held you couldn't keep it that stable without a mount. I spent years working with different lasers and that is a crazy application something I wouldn't want any part of it would seriously hurt people before they even knew they had done something wrong.

I don't think it got the metal that hot because it didn't look red to me, but that doesn't mean a whole lot.   Leon   Cmo

How do you get it inside a gas tank?  That is one of the most problematic things on these old tractors.

re: gas tanks

I'm surprised that no one is making 'plastic' tanks for old tractors. I know there's a small market, but they make them for oddball old cars.
Plastic is cheaper to make than steel, never rust and when painted look just the same.

Now IF someone does this... please send me 2 D-14 style tanks as my 'commision'., thank you

Jay

Couple years ago I was asked if I wanted a 'woodworking' CNC machine. Complete 10 by12 foot table,3HP router, computer, programs, drivers, etc. Litterally 'turn key'. I thought about it for a bit but 10 by 12 is a LOT of space to tie up(one D-14 foorprint !) . Oh yeah ..price..FREE...guy wanted something 'newer'.....

Something like that you could have a building just for it and still be money ahead. That sucks man, I don't feel your pain.

Pretty slick and fast. Give it some time and it will come down in price, maybe 5 years worth of wages instead of 10 and I will be all over it. Pfft.
