Well i seem to cant figure it out. my hd6 has two winch levers as you climb on dozer. one is the brake the other has to be the engagement lever for forward and reverse. when i move lever nothing happens in winch. someone told me theres supposed to be a lever on the winch at back of dozer is this true. could someone explain this to me. i took cover off and the gear is sliding back and forth with lever.

There is three different Carco winches generally fitted to HD5/6 the EA, the E24 and the E30 SG ,the last two have a free wheel knob which you pull out and it disengages the drum from the bull gear, on the E24 it is not uncommon for that to be sheared off. it is easy to check , undo 6 1/2 bolts on the left hand side of the winch and remove the round plate ,pull the knob out with the shaft and splined clutch , dont lose the ball bearing detents as it comes out, if it is sheared off you will need to remove the plate on the opposite side to retrieve the broken piece a good machine shop will make a new one ,I have sheared off 4 or 5 over the years. the E30 winch has a much bigger dog clutch and seems to handle the loads with ease

The EA carco had a sliding dog clutch for the free wheel , this lever on the winch was often removed, with the cover off the top you should be able to see it.
