What is the 1 1/4" hole for in the couplers?  I have never seen them used.  I suppose you could put a pipe connecting the two together.  I have never seen an implement that used them.  Pictures or a description would be great.

Our D-17 Ser III came from the dealer with one on it. Dealer said it was for the bigger equipment they were selling. A friend of mine who was helping after school (back in the day )slipped when he was climbing up the back of the D-17. His foot got caught between that bar and the tractor and he fell backwards. I turned to see him dangling by his knee. I lifted him off but the damage was done. Long and short of it was our insurance covered it and my dad did not want any of my friends helping any more. Be careful and climb up on a D-17 from the side

I'm real sure when the D-17 was introduced in 1957, they all had that cross bar/stiffener. The lift arms were still the heft of a WD-45 and having a fully mounted 4-bottom 16 inch plow hanging on there needed some extra strength.
