I have never had to change the battery on my D-14, just charged it or had a new battery installed whenever it's been to the shop for other service. The time has come to replace it, and I'm puzzled about the order to disconnect and connect safely. I know I should detach the cable from the positive terminal first (and connect it last), but is there a "right order" for the other two cables? I have only worked with cars with a positive and ground terminal on the battery and do not know why there are two connections other than + on this battery. It looks like one is grounded to the painted metal on a "special" bolt for that purpose, not the negative post of the battery where I'd expect it to be. I can't see where the third cable goes from the battery and don't want to rip things apart unnecessarily. The manuals for this tractor assume the operator is already familiar with basics and already knows the deal with these connections. Are these both grounds, and should I connect/detatch them is a particular order? Thanks for help with this novice question.

The cable that attaches to the frame (ground) gets unhooked first. thats just so you dont accedently arc the positive cable while messing with it. You should have negative ground. But im not sure. Its just for saftey you dont have to do it in any order if your careful

As Dave mentioned, the Ground cable gets removed first. Then goes back on last. Doesn't matter pos or neg ground. When replacing your Battery, always make sure cables are in great shape, clean, and connections clean. Inspect the cables at the terminal for corrosion (usually green in color) Replace the cable if this is spotted. Reason being, that corrosion spreads down through the cable under the jacket where you can't see it. Cuts way back on full power to the Starter motor. When re-installing the Battery, connect the Pos cable first, and then the Ground last. HTH Steve@B&B

Weren't the D14's positive ground? Of course this one could have been easily switched around. Probably should polarize the generator when you install a new battery.

The D14 should be positive ground and you should have only two wire connected to the battery. And as stated always remove the ground wire first and install last to prevent arcing. LOL Bob

Can you post a picture of the 3 posts on your battery? I'm not sure we're getting what you're asking. I don't remember seeing a battery like what you're describing - if I'm hearing what you're describing...

I wonder if the previous owner put a 2 battery cable on because he may have had it on hand and didn't want to go buy another cable?

If it's original, there should be just a positive and a negative, and be positive ground, and thus, remove the positive first. Darrel
