Friend had her D-14 starter pro rebuilt($$$) yet would still 'whirrrrrrrr' and not engage.
So I gave her one of mine( 6V style) to get her 'up and running'.
Took me 2 hours to fix the brand new bendix unit to cure the problem. Seems the 'gear' part was jammed all the way back( to the spring) so it'd never go forward to mesh with the ringgear.
Turns out the thread of the 'shaft' part that the gear screws on wasn't machines correctly. The groove was 'tapered' or 'pinched' at the end. 2 hours of filing later it works fine.
Sad thing is this is the THIRD bendix unit she'd tried($ $ $ ).
BTW it is 'fun' to get the armature past all the brushes .

Its not the drive assy. It has the wrong arm in it....

Talking about getting the armature past the brushes, it was tricky getting the armature back in under the brushes on my 8N. Not sure if the starters are similar, but on mine I used toothpicks to hold the springs up so I could get the armature back in.

Had same problem on my B.Put a spacer (rubber)behind gear and it works as a cushing. Works fine now.

hmm.... maybe I should tear all 3 6V starters off and compare? hmm... just looking at the pictures in the D-14 Dealers Parts cat and the one in question looks like the 12V version for brushes and has a 'long shaft' armature. though the case has a 'cover band' for the brush area.but... it does have the center bearing plate/bushing There is no tag on the motor. The drive gear is 10 teeth though,same as my #1 D-14. I know #3 is 12V , different ring gear and 11 tooth gear.
My 'idea' was that the 6V starters all had 'cover bands' on them and the 12V ones didn't.Sigh, this is getting 'complicated' and the new kitten likes to help me type as well....
Great... now...I'm really confused and I have more things to figure out.... but at least all 4 do start !!
