I am finally getting my WF tore down and ready to paint. This tractor has been in the family for many years. About 5 years ago I was able to get the time to rebuild the motor and get it running. I brought it home from its last resting spot of 25 years last summer. I hope to have it all painted an back together by late spring. Ill update when I can as I go.

Made some progress today just in time for the weather to go south again and get colder later this week.

Love the Flat Top WF.  To me one of the most unique tractor designs Allis Chalmers Made.
Let us know how it goes.
Good Luck!

I was off today the weather was supposed to be in the 60's but It never got above 50. I was able to get both side rails off and wire brushed and everything that you can not get to with the rails installed has been cleaned up.

Also got the front end taken out I have some rebuilding to do. I plan to build a new plate as this one is kinda worn out.

Ill probably get the welder out and build this up and machine it flat.

Does anybody know the diameter of the original pin on this bracing?
Sorry for the sideways picture.

It's been rather cold here the past few days so not much work has been happening. I've got the final drives all cleaned and ready to put the covers on. I was wondering what does everyone use for lubrication? The service manual says 250wt oil.

I haven't been updating this like I thought I would. Lots of progress has happened in the last few weeks. I got the front Axle out and bored a hole for a new bushing as the hole and pin was wore out. While the Axle was out I went ahead and put new bushings in the kingpins as the were wore out also. Today I started painting. I'm holding off on the sheet metal as the tractor is in the middle of my garage and in the way. I'll get it back on wheels so I can move it around and have some room. I'll post some pictures later tonight when I get on the computer.

Man, that machine is lookin' sweet! Can't wait to get back on mine. This lousy weather sucks. Cold, damp, n' raw. Not even fit fir' animals out there! I had to do the same with my axle. It was worn everywhere! Had my machinest buddy make me kingpins and we found some old Chevrolet bushings for the spindles. Came out nice!  Keep goin' man, this thing is lookin' good!!

KS I have a South Bend Lathe just like yours, nice to have. As for the question you had re the number 250 gear lube I made up my own mixing number two chasis grease and 80/90 till it looked the right consistancy others may have better ideas. Did you install the new style seals made from rubber? they help lots to keep the lube in the finals.  Looks like you are going to have a sweet WF when finished!!

I use a lube made by Mobil that we use at work it is a synthetic grease that is thick and sticky, I did use the new style axle seals and had one heck of a time getting it moved by myself after I got the wheels back on.
The lathe in the background is an old Sheldon 11" it is well used but does everything I need it to do.

I've finally got some more work done on the WF. I finished the gas tank, right fender, and the air cleaner.

Was also wondering does anybody have and advice on repairing a hood that is rusted out in the typical spot above the exhaust?

Hi Nick,

The tractor is looking really good.

If your still looking for a repair to the hood. Have you thought of cutting a car door skin with the rolled edge already there and brazing / mig welding it onto the old hood? It may be possible to get a new old stock door skin from a local bodyshop and do the same. New skins in my experience come partly rolled and a tool is available quite cheaply to finish off the rolling? Just a thought.  I'm in the UK but I can't see bodywork being any different in the US.

I'm almost at the end of a rebuild like yourself. I'm doing a B in similarly cramped conditions to you. You're getting a better finish than me on the paint I'd say.

Nick, for your hood repairs you might try a race car fab shop a good shop with have the tools to reproduce/repair the bad spots in it.
