I am putting a combine engine in my 185. Can someone tell me how to remove the cam shaft. So I can switch front plates. Does the cam gear have to be removed first. Before I can remove the cam. Thanks in advance chad

No you don't have to remove the cam gear before removing the cam. Don't take the gear off. Turn the engine on at least it's side (preferably farther so the lifters are sure not to drop out). Also I would take the push rods out, it will make it easier to slide the cam out.

Matter of fact it would be impossible to get the cam out with the push rods in. Behind the cam gear there is a thrust flange with 2 or 3 bolts, take the bolts out.

you can remove the rockers, insert / drive in wooden dowels in the lifters raise them up and secure with rubber bands to hold them up. Also there are at least 3 different front plates. The early L/M had the mount but no hole. I used a hole saw - packed the area with geased rags and drilled a hole for the gear - then the mount bolt that was missing- I used a tab to clamp it rather than a bolt. Has not leaked or seeped in a few years. Kept from having to swap front plates = welded a predrilled strap to match the side rails. Also you will have to raise or lower the front axle depend on how you say it, if the 185 did no have a crank driven oil pump - bubble in pan front .

I do have it on a stand. So rotating it is probably best option. Thanks for everyone's patience. First time I have attempted anything like this.
