    Posted: 28 May 2021 at 9:00pm
Run the 6.7 Cummins/Ram I use for hotshot into the shop for new front hubs at a dealer I trust. Walk down the hall and chat with the sales manager and we start discussing the lack of new trucks and I tell him some dealers I see in my cross country travels have 8 - 10 empty spaces between pickups on their lots, except the Japs who still have some hefty truck inventories.
Sales manager advises that factory is taking orders for 2020 year models and he had put many on order, but the factory does give a price as yet.
So I ask the guy what is going to happen with all the 2021 models sitting at the plants while waiting on chips, and how he thinks the plants will incentivize dealers to take them when chips catch up as the 2022's will also be hitting the market in late August (if they can get the chip shortage sorted soon enough).
He advises that other than govt. mandated safety devices, prior truck systems are being "streamlined" to reduce chips in the new 2022 pickups for Dodge.
He then asked if I had ever seen a loaded Lariat model with a manual sliding bench seat, then advised "you will soon as anything they can delete chips for will be plain Jane" for the new 2022's.
Used pickup prices for 3/4 ton and up are thru the roof as no new trucks to sell. Offered me what I paid for my used Ram last year if I would trade it in on a new one but could not give a delivery date for any 2022's.
I'll stay with the ol' gal, money in the bank in my book . . . . .

"taking orders for 2022's", not 2020's!

It isn't just pickups and ton or slightly bigger trucks, it is ALL including Class 8 trucks unable to move product as no chips to complete.  Dealer lots are emptier than had been for twenty years, the heavy industry trucking companies that make orders YEARS in advance are now straggling out what should have been trade ins for months where warranties have ended and major repair expenses are encroaching where those repairs as well have NO PARTS to repair them as no chips to produce them yet no replacement trucks in the wings.

yeah chip 'shortage'.... please give me a break.... I've been in the design/build microcomputer gig for 4+decades and there is NO shortage. Same SCAM as the $12 2by4. LOTS of stock, just a LOT of 'profiteering' going on.
What's no one has said in the few 'reports' I've scanned is WHAT specific 'chips' they're talking about. Unlikely the ECU...it's typically a 'generic' part used in most makes/model lines today. That leaves the junk in the 'cab', the 'infocenter'  which from my bench is not that complicated. few buttons, a screen, CANbus, connectors...easypeazzy.... I can get a 'computer' delivered in less than 4 weeks, once I send them my 'design'.
I suspect the 'problem' is the 'computers' are only from ONE MFR,something no normal OEM will allow.

Regardless the reason there is a "shortage " and the dealer price gouging is on. Recently saw an ad from a local biggy for a 2500HD two years older than mine and $10000 more than what I paid ten years ago

Maybe they will rethink the need for CHIPS..... Dont really think you need one for heat and air cond / seats / windows..... maybe the engine and trans shifting... but i even question that.

Read somewhere a while back that the average vehicle now has 12 chips.

Chips are not the only thing affecting product availability/sales. I used to greet folks with "how's business", or "how are you today" when picking up/dropping freight but started getting an ear full a few months back and it was always the same.
"Would be a helluva lot better if we could get our employees to come back to work" became the standard reply.
Working KC east, there is already shortages of stuff so it will be an interesting summer for sure.
Now saying that it's not just life guards in "short supply", but shortage of chlorine for large public pools in larger cities.
People are getting pi$$ed and tempers will flare as the heat increases.
Murder rates up in major cities, etc.

Smooth move by Joe, cuttin checks until end of September in an effort to buy future votes, glad to see so many states cutting back those federal  "bennies" as this country needs to get back to work . . . . . .

Local used car dealer always has 20-30 late model and program cars on lot. When China flu kicked in last summer he was down to 5-10 on the lot. Could not buy & sell and make any money. Things picked up into late fall early winter. After Sleepy took over it all went to h#ll. Last month took all he had left to auction and sold well over what locals would pay. He's not out of business yet...but has nothing on the lot. "Elections have consequences."

Wink TV propaganda got me down so stopped watching, pick up most things on local radio. Local car talk show on radio, I believe it is true but have not checked. Musk build a plant to make chips in Germany, did not follow "conservation protocol's" enviro wackos burned his almost complete factor down this week.

The implication was he cut corners to get chip for his cars. But would of been a good money maker to be able to sell chips to the meet demand. LOL

I have a 2013 F150.... 8 years old.... The COMPUTER decides if the alternator should charge the battery or not !!!  It monitors the OUT amps and adjusts the IN amps to the battery to match........ Put it on a trickle charger / battery charger and you really SCREW WITH ITS MIND !!

I've not heard of any chip shortage. Is it chip component(s) or entire control units?

Back in the early 80s when Motorola(now On Semi) decided I HAD to buy 10,000 pcs of the then 'hot' 68HC11, I 'jumped ship' and went to Microchip and have never looked back. Rock soild  'chips',original ones( I still have some) had quartz windows to allow UV to erase them, over time they've gotten  way better, faster, smarter AND I can buy 1 or a million, Microchip does NOT have a shortage.
The problem is the 'engineers' and 'bean counters' and '3 letter' men can't(or won't)  think 'outside the box' and use another vendor's product. "car computers" ain't that smart or sophisticated. Oddly enough, not much about 42 volt cars these days..THAT was going to be the next major improvement.....yawn.....
What's mildly interesting to me, is that not ONE actual computer chip or semiconductor  device is reported as 'unavailable', just  a generic 'word' NOT a true part number.
Smoke and mirrors, something to jack up the prices, create a demand, though like the 4 door E-stang, it'll fail to sell.

Things were a lot better when a truck was a truck Thumbs Up not an entertainment center Thumbs Down You turned the key and it went Smile no need for anything controlled by a computer Angry You had a crank to roll the windows up and down Big smile and to lock the door you pushed down a button Wink Nowadays if the battery fries on you or you're in an accident that kills the power, you're trapped inside and can't get out Censored And who needs a back up camera Confused that's what mirrors are for Tongue And if you wanted to move the seat, there's a lever for that Approve not and electric motor to burn out Wacko For those that think they need a seat warmer, PUT SOME CLOTHES ON Star Didn't your Mama teach you not to go out of the house in -20 degree weather with nothing more on than a tank top, pair or shorts and flipflops Sick If today's trucks didn't have all the useless crap that needs to be controlled with chips and computers Dead they would be reasonably priced and available Hug Maybe with the average person of today, there is a need for self leveling air shocks for when there's only a driver in the truck to keep it from leaning to the left LOL
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

Current State of the Art Electronics packages work on CAN-BUS systems.  Multiple Processors all talking to one another to operate the machine under you.  Very few systems operate independently where even lights or simple controls like blower speed only signal to a processor to operate that mechanism.  Lighter wiring, more processors, TONS more training to use new tech diagnostics that usually CANNOT pinpoint anything.

When out of warranty these can be the most expense to a auto owner, for dealers they are a Warranty cash cow until warranties end.  The most common malfunctions are shorts and bad grounds which can lead to any number of malfunctions and are not easily discernable as to where is broken.

I ordered my truck (2021 Ford F-350) on Friday, January 29, 2021.I picked it up on Tuesday, March 20. It was actually at the Ford dealer sometime the week before, but I was out of town. The dealer told me if I had waited another two weeks before ordering, I probably wouldn't have got it for months.

I traded in a 2016 F-350 Lariat diesel with 56,000 miles. The dealer had it listed on their website for $56,600. The truck was $68,000 new in 2016 ! It is now gone off their website and it is not on their lot.

Ford has so many Super Duty trucks built at their Kentucky Super Duty plant that they have rented some of the parking lots at Kentucky Speedway and the stored new trucks can be seen from space. https://www.thedrive.com/news/40458/thou........t-kentucky-speedway-due-to-chip-shortage

This whole microchip doesn't seem to be getting any better, according to this article.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/05/07/chip-sho........-have-major-real-world-consequences.html

"If you listen to Ford, BMW, Volkswagen, they all highlighted that there’s bottlenecks in capacity and they can’t get the chips they need to manufacture the new cars,” he said, adding that he thinks it will go on for 18 months.

May not ever recover for the existing model year and next model year machines.  Repair parts are also in trouble.

The story keeps changing, at first it was due to the ship blocking the Suez Canal.

Taiwan is, by far, the biggest supplier of microchips. (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing and United Microelectronics being the biggest.)

As with many products, production was slowed by COVID. Since microchips are used in almost all electronics (including smart phones, computers, gaming systems, appliances, etc.), production just can't keep up with demand as things open up.

It isn't just a US problem. Automakers and manufacturers around the world have cut or stopped production because of the microchip shortage.

I'm wondering how they get the vehicles into the parking lots if they are missing chips.  Maybe they aren't necessary to drive it out of the factory or do they have to plug in something to move it then remove it for the next one?
My arms must have gotten shorter or something but it sure is nice to have a power window on the passenger side at least.
