Hey, I just bought a d grader, was wondering what year it would be. D-5592 is serial no. And is round tube. Was told engine made noise, but ran. Compression was 100 in 3 cylinders only 50 in #2. What engine would this be? Engine has am3853-5 on side under distributor. Thank you!

I too bought a 1959 D grader. I ran so badly it could hardly pull it's self in 4th gear. The engine ran rough so I pulled the head to get a look at the valves and sleeves. The sleeves had a noticeable ridge at the top and a slight scratch on #4, possibly a broken ring. Had the head rebuilt with a new rocker arm shaft, replaced two burn exhaust valves and one rocker shaft post that had been broken and brazed together. The engine now ran smooth and had good power but still burned some oil and regularly fouled #4 plug. Electronic ignition kept the plugs a little cleaner so I never did any more work on the engine while I owned it.

So we pulled the engine apart today, had 2 rocket shaft stands broke. #2 cylinder had excessive water damage, all cylinders had a groove at tdc probably where loose fitting pistons rocked in bore. But #3 piston has .070 play up and down, so rod or wrist pin is gone. Got everything off, pulling it tomorrow. I wonder if someone transplanted a 45 engine? It had obviously been tampered with as some install stuff was cobbed, bolts not correct etc. Side of block says 45-18667-g. Would that be a wd45 engine?

WD-45 engine serial number would indeed be 45-XXXXX and is a W-226 engine. The G-226 engine from a D-17 tractor serial number would be 17-XXXXX. While they appear to be the same engine, they are not, as the G-226 has larger diameter main bearings so the block and crankshaft are different.
