Well I tackled the 18.4 -38 on the 190 today. Not too big of a job, took the rim off and used the skid loader to pop the bead...that took all of 15 minutes. When I pulled the tube out and aired it up, I saw the hole on the lower sidewall. Looking at the tube, there were patches on the opposite sidewall. This lead me to the conclusion that the way the radial tire runs, it is chafing the tube and creating holes. I decided to let the pros patch it, so I took it to town to get patched. The tire guy said he sees a lot of holes in radial tubes like mine, and they try to go tubeless whenever possible. He had no cure....does anyone else? These radials are Taurus brand, "made with B F Goodrich knowledge in Hungary" it says on the tire....anyone else used this brand?

You do need tubes specificaly for radial tires and if you run with low pressure (under 10 psi) you will need natural rubber tubes. Had the same problem when running low pressure in 20.8 x 38 Firestone 7000's

Howdy Eldon,
Had that same problem with some tires some time ago. I put what I call tire liners in the tires then the tubes. Some semi owers used then years ago. Kinda like a cushion. The snow holding off yet? Kurzy

No snow yet, Joe...too much to do yet! The American made inner tube says 18.4R-38 / 18.4-38....I assumed the R meant 'radial'. I'm wondering if the foreign made tire might be a little more abrasive inside?

Taurus is part of the michelin group it is made with michelin technology have fitted loads with no problems if you use a MICHELIN OR KLEBER TUBE not a cheap copy as they cheap ones are half as thick as Kleber and twice the trouble.

Most modern radial tires are designed to be fitted tubeless, but as it says on the tire (may be fitted with a tube) as tyres have several ribs on the inside wich cause the punctures not a penatration or nail.

Throw in a can of baby powder as a tube lubricant. Basically talc.
And inspect the inside of the tire for rough spots, maybe grind them smooth. Gerald J. |

Eldon: Maybe some tire reliners and talc would solve it.

Thanks for the info....if there is a next time I will probably add the liner. I had the tube patched and everything back together within 3 hours so it wasn't as big a deal fixing as I thought it would be.
