So what is correct when torqueing head bolts when 4 water manifold studs are fine thd and the other bolts are coarse thd not to mention that 3 are shorter that the rest? In the theory world the fine thd nuts would be different than the coarse thd capscrews and the shorter capscrews would be different than the long ones to achieve equal clamping force.Don't even mention the nut under the thermostat hsg which I can only get a box end wrench on.I'm guessing that "close" is good enough since I've not seen this addressed on here before.

Steve I could be wrong but since the D17 has a simular head and block to a wd45 the torque on it is shaft support3/8 25-30 ft lbs nut rocker arm cover 3/8 10-15 ft lbs head to block1/2 90 -95 and 7/16 70 -75 and manifold to head 7/16 35 -40 ft lbs can't find anything on wd45 hope this is some help Niel

Thanks Niel.Now that makes another problem.My head bolts/studs are 1/2in..Only have a WD factory service manual and a I&T(joke)WC- WD-WD45 manual which both say 70ft/lb on bolts and 25 on the 3-3/8 studs.

In my Allis Repair book(bible) it says 90 ft. lbs on the 1/2 in bolts and 25 on the 3/8 bolts.  I just recently put a head on a WD-45 so I still remember the numbers.  The book is an old A-C shop service book which ranges from the WC to the early D-17's, so I am pretty faithful in the information in there.

The O.E. A-C shop manual for the D17 says to torque the 1/2" cap screws and studs 90-95 ft lbs. Torque the three 7/16" capscrews 70-75 ft lbs. There is no mention of any 3/8" bolts or studs. Can't say for sure if the WD45 226 is the same though.

There are three 3/8" fine thread studs in the block on the WD-45, and i'm pretty sure my D-17 was the same way.  Newer D-17's may be 7/16, idk.

A little birdy told me that D17's have GR8 bolts.The few that are marked on my 45 are GR5. I'll have to find a standard torque chart and see what 1/2-13 GR5 is rated.90 sounds high.

i am just now putting a head on a wd45. Factory grade 5, 1/2"-13 thread and i am questioning the 90 foot pounds in the factory manual. The I.T. says 70 foot pounds but more importantly my bolt chart say 75 foot pounds max dry. 90 is too high.

ALL D-17 gas blocks had three 7/16" bolts in the spark plug side of the head. ALL OF THEM. Only the WC/WD/WD45's had three 3/8" studs with nuts on the spark plug side.  I'd be careful torqueing those old Gr-5  1/2" diameter head bolts to 90 ft lbs !!  I think 75-80 is plenty.  D-17 head bolts are Gr-8 1/2" diameter and are torqued to 90-95 ft lbs

When I did the 170, I got a 2" long adapter wrench. Was 3/4" box end x 3/8" square drive. Using the calculation chart with the torque wrench I adjusted the setting for the added length of the adapter.
