Brought home a 170 today. I believe the serial number shows 175-1095d. Wouldn’t this be a 175? I understand it could be built from parts but it has the first design front axle and the side mount pump. What am I dealing with?

Serial numbers began at 175-1001. So yours is 1095. Early 175's had the side pump AND old front axle.

Thank you. That’s interesting. I thought the change happened completely within the 170’s.

S/n 175-2035 and up have the front pump/new axle design.  S/n 170-7500 and up for the smaller tractor.

Both the 170 and 175 switched to the front mounted pump and reversed front axle in 1971 at the serial numbers provided by the good Dr.

If your serial number shows 175-1095D, you actually have a 175, not a 170.  Not uncommon for someone to put the wrong decal on it at some point in its history.

We picked this tractor up for the loader that was on it. With the price we paid the tractor was basically a bonus if we can get it going. As posted above s/n would make it a 1970 175 diesel. The previous owner told us it was a 170 that was originally gas and was converted to diesel and that a special adapted had to be made to make it fit. This was supposedly what he was told years ago when he bought it. I don’t see anything to indicate that it wasn’t always a diesel except the hood. The oval hole has been covered and the knock out removed for the exhaust pipe. The hood decal is a 170. The working is pretty bad but not much out of the ordinary except a 12v solenoid and what looks like a ballast resistor mounted under the battery tray on the right side. Either way , converted or not we have what seems to be a 175 with a Perkins diesel, that looks like I can get up and going for very little cost. 🤞
