sigh.. anyone know if it's possible to actually remove/replace the starter in an FPD50... with the Buda 4BD153 diesel engine in it ?? 3 bolts hold it onto the bell housing (3rd bolt looks 'fun') Starter gets lots of power, click, doesn't spin though. Not batteries Not 'stuck' (spun flywheel with prybar) Not 'electrical' aka wiring
Also can I remove the 'starter starter' ? Box on top of the motor section. I can remove the bolt connecting power to the 'strap' going to the motor, 'think' I can get the slotted screws holding the 'housing' to the starter mtg plate
also anyone have a real part number for one ??
All 'words of wisdom' appreciated..actually nice here +2,sunny which is good cause ,of course, it's outside, won't start and flat tire....I KNEW I should have left it in the 50* garage...sigh.. jay

Congrats on getting the starter out! When we're retired, time isn't the biggest obstacle... it's being patient when we tackle these 'huff & puff' jobs. You can take comfort in the fact that you're well ahead of the 'book time' for doing this on a BMW car! We're looking forward to your post about getting the starter back in and everything working well again!

So Jay... for all the trouble you had getting the starter out, how long did it take to put it back in?

Took about an hour. Normal ,healthy guy it'd be a 10 minute job. First it's heavy and I can't lean over, 2nd you NEED a 9/16,custom shallow MAGNETIC socket on a 1/4" drive setup,3rd, you REMOVE the air intake elbow 'adapter' FIRST....,4th..it'd be quicker if it didn't have the custom ABS PCV (blowby) system to reattach... Once everything was 'buttoned up', turn ign on,3 quirts of ether, pedal to metal, turn to start, vroom.....once warmed up, drove to garage to patch the patched tube in the right rear tire.Ongoing battle..no tires available, lousy innertubes. Actually thinking I could cut down a 5.8-12 tire use as a 'liner' between innertube and real tire.Naturally I tossed 3 of them out last year cleaning up next door..
Oh well, she's next door,in the old D-14 #4 shed. So 'all is well'
