I would like to know if I could use an HD7G steering clutch drum and brake drum hub in my HD6G. Perhaps another way to ask the question is: Is the steering clutch drum and hub from an HD6EP interchangeable with a direct drive HD6? I may have to replace the final drive pinion shaft. I know that the steering clutch hub, springs and pressure plate are different on the 7G. I have a source for 7G parts that I can't find for my 6G. It looks like the 7G drum would be easier to change because of the better bolt location on the 7G drum.

I'm trying to plan ahead for when it is warm enough to play with my outside toys.

The final drive parts on HD7G should't be interchangable with 6g

Seems HD5 and HD6  are the same but 7 - different build completely

Dozer:  If you have the old drum from the HD6 - can it be machined and refaced and turned to spec?

Hd6 EP and wet back end HD6E have the same steering clutch drum as the HD7G ,The HD6G has the same drum as the HD6B and the HD5 which have dry back ends, both have the same splines but the HD6EP,E, and 7G drums are bolted to the drive flange at a larger diameter than the earlier drums and there is no metal to drill and tap. the wet clutch plates can be used in the dry backend.

Thank you. The dry HD6 clutch pack fits the 7G drum so the inboard side fits. The outboard side of the drum is different requiring the use of the 7G drum hub. The question comes down to does the spline on the 7G drum hub fit the HD5/6 final drive pinion shaft? If it does not, will the HD6E/EP pinion shaft fit in the older machines. The pictures in my parts book look like the old machines have a straight spline and the wet clutches have a tapered spline. I don't have a parts book for the HD6EP. There is a possibility I will have to change the bearing cage as well as the pinion shaft.

Another issue is with the larger hub on the 7G they also cracked. I had to replace both sides on my unit when I busted the brake shoe as they had both cracked around the center spline hub.

Thanks that is new information for me to process. The picture looks like the inboard hub (throughout bearing side)

I posted a picture of my steering clutch drum 25 November 2016. When I used my arbor press to remove the clutch pack from the drum, the frictions were destroyed and the pressure plate bent. The splines in the drum are filled with parts of the frictions. I made a HSS chisel to remove the frictions but it isn't going well.

The posted picture (Like I Need Another Project) is the clytch assembly from my HD5B

Hi Dozer
Yes the hd7g flange and shaft can be used, the straight spline is the same and the bearings are the same part number, the early type spline is the same as the HD5 and early HD6 axles which were prone to break, it was upgraded for the wet back end tractors HD6-E-EP and 7G which all share the same parts, an excellent final drive except when the steering pump gets worn, and it could handle the increase in HP.
