Could someone please explain how the front electric clutch works on a 1920 Deutz Allis garden tractor,, i have current to it but it quit

I think that the ground for the clutch has to go through the sear safety switches???

real simple test unplug clutch with two jumper wires hook one terminal two bat. pos. the other two bat neg. dos not matter what terminal if clutch locks in then it is working so you have a problem in your electical system probley the on off switch.       if it does  not but yuo can push the plate in on the pully then you might be able to press the pully and plate in closer to the magnet that does not happen very often

The ring of wire creates a magnetic force and pulls plate into the iron plate that turns with engine . If it does not pull in problem with coil or electric going to coil , 
 Test coil with multimeter or just power up with jumper wire . 
Should create a magnetic effect -
