I like the spindles on our Scag and Bunton mowers. The spindles are hollow and use a long 5/8 bolt and nut to retain the blades instead of cap screws and common flat washers can be used if you lose the spacers some how. Bearings are common off the shelf too but in 10 years we have not had to change any.

Butch, the spindle assy for the 616-620 are about 400.00 each, less pulleys and bearings. I think I am going to make a new style like the Dixie Chopper uses.They look heavy and should last like the ones you mentioned. Thanks tracy

in my opinion u should never need a new spindle,my 620 which I bought used still has all original spindles everything is original no new bearings,if you grease them often u wont have any trouble,mine has mowed a lot of acres,i also have several large john deeres with 60" decks,never replaced a bearing yet,over 1300 hrs

thats areal good question used ones i would probley rebiuld cast iron john deere huosings new ones just looking in the oregon catalog at new ones probley would order some for bobcat or exmark we sell a ton of the newer mtd and ayp spindles they are cheap but not very toughf

One trick I picked up is to add a grease zerk( if not already there) and pop the 'dust shields' of the bearings to expose the race to the grease. Neighbour has 25 years service doing that. He also removes the spindle assemblies every fall, greases the nuts/bolts holding them onto the deck. 'Old school' stuff....
sure wish I could get $400 for a spindle !!
heck I'd settle for $200....

Swisher mower I have the deck bearings went out , found they used sealed bearings but not shielded = so I replaced with sealed and shielded bearings - was thinking of adding grease zerk to space and pulling the inside seals but figured 4 years service on first set - so should last about the same or longer this time around .
