My part time help's car shredded the serpentine belt. When I went to replace it I thought I would check all of the pulleys. The engine fired right up, alternator pulley ok, power steering too , air conditioner compressor pulley free spins and spring loaded tension pulley is ok. What is the pulley underneath the air compressor? Like a pollution pump or what? Anyway, that pulley wont turn at all. What is it called and how much to expect to pay?

i had a 89 F250 wiht a 315 motor. It had a smog pump on it. It pumped air into the exhaust to dilute the "smoke" and possibly cause some other after burner effect, but it basically dilutes what comes out the exhaust with air. Not much value. Cant replace the pulley, it needs a pump. I took mine off and rebuilt the pump with two bearings and a shaft, no internals. Just an idler. I have heard of others buying a shorter belt and just bypassing that pulley.

Breeze, that truck came with or without that smog pump depending on what market it was made for. There is a shorter belt available that doesn't route over that pulley. There should be a decal under the hood some where that shows the belt routing and it might show both. My 89 does not have the smog pump and I THINK the decal shows both.
I doubt if that pump is serving any purpose now anyway. Put the other belt on it, remove the pump and crimp off the lines that go into the exhaust manifolds.

i agree with charlie. get rid of that pump UNLESS you have to have the vehicle emision tested then you must have that on to pass i believe.

Will do. There is no state inspection down here.

Is the smog pump built in to the air condition compressor bracket or does the pump bolt into the bracket? I took a quick look at it this morning and its kinda hard to tell.

I had the same problem on an 88 Chevy. I just removed the pulley and left the rest on. I think it is part of the same bracket that the AC uses. If I remember right, I had to get a couple different belts before I found one that fit properly as the one it called for without the pump didn't work.

Thanks for the helps guys, I got the pump off and now we'll measure for a belt. It kinda looked like the belt would rub on the hub that the pulley bolts to. Wont happen now. Thanks again.
