What is hay worth in your area?

I have been hearing ludicrus prices around here. 120 - 180 and up   ...one said he heard of hay selling at 300 per big round. Can't imagine that.

Which brings me to ask, what do you think about keeping or selling cattle with high hay, corn, and bean prices?

Good Hay 2nd. cutting  sold for $12.20 a small square here two weeks ago.As for selling your cattle I would have to figure all the factors such as enough feed, the cost versus the price of cattle.and how I really wanted to feed them out with winter coming on.Many here are making CRP hay which is junk in my opinion. They will sell it and keep someone's critter alive.Northern and UP Mich. has hay as they got plenty of rain . One ad for 4x5 rounds alfalfa clover grass mix $30.00 per bale so there is hay but I believe you will not find much for $30.00 as hay brokers are gobbling it up !

They best not get caught by any Feds selling CRP cut hay. It'll cost em way more than what they could get for the hay to stay out of jail and pay the USDA off.

$10 for an average looking square bale at the stockyards lately. I baled a 2 acre patch this summer rolling round bales... first cut 18 bales, second cutting 4 bales, third cutting 3 bales. Fourth cutting has gotten some rain and looks like it might not be too bad so maybe the price will ease up a little.
I sold 8 Angus cows last year to pay for part of a cement floor... kept three multicolored. Last year I completed a fence around 5 acres of woods and let all 11 cows into it only to see them eat it to near nothing in a month. The 3 cows and a borrowed bull have been working on the woods all summer this year. Point is that if I had all the cows I had last year I'd be screwed for feed for a bunch of cows that are worthless compared to last year.
My buddies mother called and asked If I knew anyone with any bales for sale. She didn't want to pay for $10 bales for her horses. Shes retired and her hay field didn't produce enough bales and she is worried whether or not she will have enough feed.  The same lady hasn't put down any fertilizer in the last 14 years. Cant afford it. Perhaps she cant really afford to own horses.
People in the USA better get used to imported boxed beef after this year...

Hay must normally be cheap out there. I hasn't changed much out here $120-240/ton for grass

Alfalfa, which has to be trucked in from the Eastern part of the state, $240-350/ton

Horse people out here have no problem paying $18 for a 110lb bale for their big pets.

Straw runs $60/ton and up

How does one follow the price of hay when there are so many sizes and shapes of bales? I am aware of three different sizes of square bales, and two round....there may be more. Is there a standard size/shape when quoting prices?
I am still confident of this;

I'm with you, Lou. Totally different terminology than out here. Here we talk about 2-tie and 3-ti3 on the small bales , 3X4 or 4foot round on the big bales. Weight of the bale is almost always given and how many bales/ton.

Lou , i understand the confusion . We make small squares  from a 336 JD  baler . They are about 35 to 40 lbs . They sell the best ...as  far as price ..partly due to the fact there are so few people  making them anymore

Then there are big  squares , and round bales .For our beef cow herd we use large round bales (1500-1700 lbs ) I have a neighbor that makes  small round bales (800 to 900 lb ).. he likes the ease of moving them around with his bobcat .Then there  big squares .. wieght varies from 600 to 1000 lb bales  .
Most of the hay around here is sold by the ton . 300  PER TON  for good quality Nebraska alfalfa..
Hope that helps Wink

Just came home from Northern Mich. and saw all kinds of hay much of it was good quality Grass Alfalfa mix.Crops overall from north of Lansing say St. Johns on up to Traverse City look good.Down along the border with Indiana and Ohio awfully dry and yields for Corn are in the 20 to 30 bushel range with some spots below that ! I have not checked any Soybeans since most farmers are just done spraying for Spider Mites.
