ok what just happened??!  My question is are the 5g and the 6g similar machines?  What parts will interchange? Thanks for any insight on this.

The transmission,stering cluch,final drive and undercariage are interchangable

If you take the tractor from the transmission back , all HD5 and HD 6 parts interchange. Track links , sprockets, rollers. idler and other track parts but each machine uses more or less links in track. 
 counter weight, also interchange . HD5G was a 1 yard machine HD6G a 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 yard machine .

thanks for the info.I found out from the guy that has this machine that it is actually a hd6g serial # 1898 my guess is its a 55 or 56? Anyone know what year this one is?

Later HD-6's had many differences from the HD-5.  Undercarriage parts are mostly interchangeable for all models.
