    Posted: 15 Mar 2012 at 9:56pm
My buddy is in need of help finding a alternator for his 185 diesel with the proper tach drive ratio. We just spent 2 days on the road to get the tractor. Now hes getting it ready for haying this year. Does anyone have one laying around or know of one?
Thanks

Just calibrate the gascolator and mark it with a sharpie....if that don't work time the pto and adjust the throttle stop pin.

Could probably find a used one from a salvage yard.  Finding a good used gear drive unit is nearly impossible though, the large gears are usually junk.  I just recently found a good one after looking for over a year.  Happy Hunting.

If someone has a Delco number or even an AC number, I may be able to get one if yer' interested. I'm not familiar yet with these 170-190 units, but I may be able to get the electrical parts needed for them. Heck, I might have an Alt on the shelf that would fit or work and not know it!

Steve, I think there problem is with the mechanical drive tach part not electrical.....but maybe you can still fix them up........
AGCO number is 70255864 or Delco 1100887

This is for the 185, other may be the same

Steiner has the tach drive assembly for $50.  It may not list it for the AC 185 but it lists the drive for a bunch of other brands.  I'll bet that it's the same as on the 185.  The calibration of the tach will be with the size of the pully on the altinator.

Don't rule out e-bay.  I found a rebuilder there that had one with the tach drive and he even converted it to a one wire set-up for me.

Steiners Tach drive is for a massey / international, that's why it is NOT listed for an ALLIS. It looks the same but both gears are different tooth counts. We have the correct large gear and small gear in stock. The small gears is NOS from AGCO and the Large gear we have made. I have contacted  all the sellers on ebay that list it for an allis about the gear tooth count and they either come up with the wrong number or they don't respond because they know they are wrong. The units that Steiner has will work but the calibration will be off 20+%. If you use it for an hour meter for oil changes it's fine, if you use it for RPM it way off. CORRECT RATIO IS  45/12 the the one's on ebay and the ones that are sold by steiner's and others is 43/14. If there is math member here on the forum please crunch the number and report / respond back. David www.djstractorparts.com

If you have an auto electric shop near that has been around a spell they can get you the correct alternator, at least they could a year ago when I "corrected" our 220 of the same problem. You wil also need to purchase the required seperate regulator which is now electronic but housed in a case that loooks like the older units.  Some of the tach drive parts are available from AGCO, take first born, check book, stash money and pocket change.  Mine is aftermarket and David is correct the gear ratio being off. I corrected  mine inside the tach instead of messing with the gears as I didnt know he was reproducing them.

I guess I should say that one of the machine shops that we deal with is making them for us, we just helped pushing the idea and the need to have them made as we had a lot of request from our customers and that is how these type of parts make it to market.
Butch, do the old tachometers have a fast / slow adjustment screw? I kown after market don't have, at least not a hold through the can. THANKS

Allis would be 3.75 to 1 and the other would be 3.0714 to 1
3.75:1 and 3.07:1
you should be able to figure out the % and rpm difference from there.  A speedometer to rear end ratio calculator online would also work.

When I took my alt in to have it work on, off my 190XT, the repair shop told me to take care of that one because the tach drive parts are getting hard to come by.
