Automotive ps fluid or Hydraulic fluid will work with the char lynn unit. The pump is the same as used on Ford and Chrysler cars in the 50's. You do not need the additives in the transmission fluid.

Do not know if my D 17IV has that brand of steering pump, but when I replaced the bearings and after filling it with fluid, I cranked up the engine and had the air problem.stopped the engine and cracked the output line, recranked the engine and with oil squirting/spurting after a bit it was retighten  the line to get rid of the air.
