The starter nose broke on our D17 Series I tractor and now the foot clutch will not disengage.  The tractor splits in half easily enough but is this something that should be attempted "at home."  I am concerned that one of the halves would fall or it would be difficult to get the clutch disk and transmission shaft to align on reassembly. We were able to remove the broken starter pieces through the inspection hole.

I pulled the engine out of mine, (diesel) and cribbed it up under the clutch housing. An ordinary cherry picker had plenty of capacity to lift the engine out. I would recommend not trying to remove the engine and front axle as an assembly as the front engine mounts are not very thick. The manual says to remove the front bolster, then the engine.

Ditto on Brian.
Remove engine panels, center strip, radiator cowl and radiator. Crib up under the torque tube. Remove front axle/bolster. Remove linkages, wiring, P/S tubing. Use a cherry picker engine hoist and remove the engine. This is the "short" version as I am sure I left some things out.
This is a good time to fix/repair any leaking seals (engine and power steering). A good I&T manual is most helpful (as is another pair of eyes and hands).
What this country needs is more unemployed politicians-and lawyers.

I did the clutch on my D19D without removing the engine, but I did it in my uncle's shop, he has a hoist. I actually blocked the front axle/engine/frame rails with the hoist and rolled the back away from it with a floor jack
