Looking at a 715( I think) backhoe locally. Guy says he rebuilt the injectors (diesel) but still smokes. I'll be going to run the machine in a couple days, what should I look for? How available are parts?  My nephew will be there, he is a diesel mechanic, He'll check out the engine.

The owner doesn't even know what year it is. Is there a place to find that on the tractor?

Sorry for all the questions, first backhoe purchase, got 9.5 acres and want to save myself some cash on stumping ( not all 9 acres!!)

He's asking $3500, most I've seen for sale are in the $7000 range........

Have a 715B as pictured in avatar.
4 cyl Perkins engine , std 14' hoe with 34" bucket, 1 year loader bucket. 4 sp warner transmission , fwd/rev shuttle with torque converter. Orbital steering - full hydraulic.
Place to watch is the front engine timing plate crack where hyd pump mounts. Wont hurt much but leaks and gets messy .. Update had a support bracket that steadys pump from torque shifting under heavy hyd load.
Fast and strong hyd response should be expected, machine should lift and cycle front bucket fast with good lift and breakout power. Hoe is 2 lever and should not have lot of slop in levers and should hold in any position. Stabalizers should raise machine easily , Hoe when booming down should lift machine easily and when raised on boom should be able to swing tractor, with some effort, after stabelizers are off ground. When swinging boom there should be cushon from swing cylinders as they come close to end of swing.
Perkins may smoke when cold but should clear after few minutes of running and under load it should be clean smoke.
At that price a real good buy even if it needs work.  Also watch for wear on all pin and bushing parts , one wear area is lower boom pin and watch for slop there as it wears fast.
With no weight on bucket and bucket on ground check slop in loader arms for bucket tilt.

The owner says he had the injectors rebuilt, but thinks its a head gasket now. What is the availability of parts? I'm in Massachusetts, but  know I'll probably have to order parts through the mail. The same guy has a ford 4500 and a ford 3500 for $5500 and $6500, but the Allis looks like a better machine. Thanks for the quick response.

Where in Mass are you? Coke has always had info on that machine. As he said, use the search function.

Trany or fwd/rev unit.. separate units, was one here listed a while back that needed gears in 4 sp unit. The clutch pack is something else , parts are out there for it and believe clutches and such will run around $600 . book calls for 18 hrs for R&R .

He says the borg warner tranny is bad, he might not know, I haven't talked with him. Its a little further away than I'd like to go, transporting will be costly.

The 715 comes in variations , mine is 715B - D  1981/82 mfg. later units changed engines to either AC or Cummings but were built after AC sold line.
Early and late units with cabe varied in the design and if ROPS cab. Basic machine is same . I have a Digmore extenda-hoe which will dig to 17 1/2' depth.
fwd /rev unit are hyd operated clutch pack with torque converter ahead of it . 4 speed is a separate box, there is a short drive shaft between tranys and rear housing for axle and brakes, so power units can be removed with tractor on grond without splitting .
Price is well within area where work can be done on machine and still a good deal , AC machines will not command the resale but as far as machine they will outwork a 555 Ford and at lower cost to operate .

Thanks again Coke.

If it turns out to operate well, I'll pick it up this weekend. Can't wait to get it in the woods!

Went by to get a MUCH better look at this machine. Overall, the machine looks OK, but the motor is a different story.

Its a 715B-L

The fuel tank has been open top the elements for 6-8 months
Fuel filters are LOADED with dirty gritty water
The valve cover gasket has a chunk blown out ( too much blow by)

It was listed as "runs good" on craigslist, but it would be weeks and $$$$$ before this tractor ever runs...........

Thanks for the advice guys!

Being in MA , would be a little far for me but wonder if it could not be had for price of scrap. Would not mind having a spare for parts or project.
I know when I bought mine they were thinking of sending it out east as the dealer said there was a market there for the AC machines but here they were not popular as no dealer network.

The guy selling it says he has someone in WI that wants it. He wants $3000. I told him he was crazy. I think  its been non running for a long time. And when it was running, there was NO maintenance at all.

Just look in the RI craigslist. Its listed under backhoe, in the picture its got the name CERI on it.

There is also one in the craigslist massachusetts, in the Worcester area. He wants $2500 and says it needs a tranny.
