Norm Swinford's AC Farm Equipment 1914-1985 book's page 198 reads, "The Farm Equipment Division had a pair of cutaway 426-in3 engines which told the A-C engine story at fairs and farm shows. They attracted much attention and were effective sales tools."
Anyone remember seeing these? The 426 cutaway engine photo appears to be painted dark - Maroon? Black? Were they promoting the 7000 series tractors & Gleaner line? |

I remember seeing one at the MN state fair sometime, maybe in early 70's? Can't remember what color they were.

I don't remember seeing one of those, but very likely. I saw the Gleaner N Series cage chromed cutaway, with all the lights, and it turned. Pretty awesome demonstration.

The 426 was first used in the D21, so I could only imagine that it be painted orange. Going out on a limb here, that is well before my time on this planet! |

I DO remember it, it, along with the cut a way of a black 7000 power train was on a trailer designed by Lynn Lochery and pulled by a 3/4 ton ford ..... a bucking nightmare to pull. Pull into a shop, fold it out and presto a show platform to dazzle the competition.... in theory - it was a man killer to set up and a sasquatch killer to fold up. I drove the beast from Thibodaux, La to St Louis all across the south... and have the hemorrhoids to prove it. The only saving grace was one had to stop every hour for fuel - both tanks. The trailer had some weird brake system, electric with a surge brake. When you put on the brake the trailer slammed you back in the seat, then the surge system hit and bam, through the windshield. It would not have been so bad if each successive sales person thought it would be necessary to put in a set of planetaries and axles off a Deere, then they added axles from a IH then a MF . Now we were pulling TWO tractors.
But I digress, the engine was a 7080 cutaway with chrome everything. Plastic covered the cuts and were handy, ha, when we had to replace every light bulb every set up due to the less than luxurious ride on country roads. Great forethought had the trailer and truck using the same tires and wheels....and a handyman jack... yeah buddy....all buried under ten tons of junk in the bed of the pickup under the camper top... proving grounds,,, proof the top dogs had great ideas we peon s had to live with,,,,,

I reread my post and it is too negative, the cut a way was most impressive- we dwarfed the competition in gear and axle size and tranny mass. Deere's explanation, "we use better steel..... " and it was a black unit we pulled in late 77 and 78. |

Tbran - Wow! Thanks for all your past AC efforts & great input. I didn't realize a power train accompanied the cutaway engine. I found some pictures in a 1980's A-C 7000 series brochure. Is this how the engine cutaway looked? ![]() |

Here are the transmission cutaway pics I found. I know the A-C 7080 was not offered with a Power Shift trans, so please just enjoy the 12 speed PS picture.
Tbran, was the 20 speed PD transmission cutaway on your trailer back in 1977 & 78?

I have seen all of these cutaways several times at various shows and service schools. There were also many other smaller items that were passed around during the service schools. Hydraulic pumps, valves and usually different engine components. The last time that I recall seeing the cutaways was at a Milwaukee training facility. It would be cool to have them, but they were probably scrapped. This same training facility in Milwaukee also had a complete rear end ,transmission assembly that was engine powered so that you could diagnose hydraulic problems. It had a remote operation station. It had a wide variety of gauges hooked up to monitor different hydraulic pressures. No wheels or sheet metal, just the drive train.

I agree, Tim is full of stories. He really SHOULD consider writing a book of them for us young guys.
That is a very nice video of the centerfold caravan! Wish I could've been there to see it.
